Hi Cari, this is Allison from Nashi.^^
This tutorial is perfect, and will help so much. I can't wait to try it out on the manga I am working on for class. Also, thanks for spending so much time with my father and myself. SCAD is my dream school and hearing you have such a love for it shows me it is the right fit for me.
Thanks for also telling me about your friend Severin, he was very helpful in giving me teachers to take at SCAD.

I'm really glad the tutorial can help you. >< Also, it was really nice to chat with you as well! 8D I hope everything works out with you coming to SCAD. [i still recommend the Atlanta campus though...] If you need extra toning advice for your project, just ask. ^^

There were parts that were a little hard to follow so I am kind of trying something different from the toner style. I am doing it kind of like a cartoon in a newspaper, with cross hatching and that sort of thing. I hope my partner likes it.^^

9__9; I suggest it.... for whatever reason, tablet work is hardest on my hands out of all the tools i usually use.
I wish I'd been warned properly. I'd have took preventative measures.... but I wasn't. So now I have wrist problems for... er... the rest of my life with these hands. *waits for Star Wars technology to be invented. or alchemy.*

This is a really nice tutorial... if I had PS 7. But it's good to know if I ever do get PS 7. ^~^

hm. What dpi is that at? If you saved the tut from online, trimmed it down to that example, and then toned ... that may be problem. XD I posted the tut at web resolution [72 dpi] so in photoshop you'll have to go blow it up to 600 dpi or some such size.

Awesome tutorial. Solved several questions of mine ^^
One question though. When converting to bitmap, can you explain when you would choose to use diffusion dither and when you'd use halftone?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
blix-it In reply to hakudominate [2009-01-18 02:03:29 +0000 UTC]
ah. 8D
The difference is more obvious when printed. The halftone will yield clean evenly spaced dots. The diffusion dither will yield sandy chaotic dots.
[please note - this is different from adding "noise" .... noise is what you add while it's still grayscale prior to converting to either halftone or diffusion. Noise will make the dots [or sand] slightly less unified, thus safer from miore when the dots undergo the harsh process of being printed on actual paper.]

Good timing, I just finished today. Some of the shading I did with screentones from a patterns pack, but for things like backgrounds, I used your method.
Granted, I did it at 600 dpi since I doubt my computer could handle 1200, so I still need to fiddle around with some settings -3

This is very helpful. ^^ Btw, is there anyway to resize the toned version to look exactly like the original? I would want to produce a high-quality version and a smaller, resized version for upload. O.o

Casmailee In reply to Casmailee [2007-11-30 06:34:22 +0000 UTC]
It's so complicated. ><" I understand what you're getting at. Layers sometimes move when you resize them in Photoshop, however. It would take so long. D:
But thank you anyways, it's helpful.

blix-it In reply to Casmailee [2007-11-30 06:00:46 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for being so late in replying. o__o;;
I think the best way to try that... [try, as I've never done it. ><] would be to save the grey scale version of your page that's print size. Then resize it to what size you want it on the web and after resizing, then convert all the grey shades to dot tones. You'd end up with three versions of your art ~ the big grey scale one, the big dot tone print one, the little dot tone web one.
Sadly, I don't think this will work well. T_T The fact of the matter is, web graphics are 72 dpi. Printed manga is 600dpi or so. There is no way you'll ever get a nice, round, neat dot out of 72 dpi graphics. ... And if you do, they're big dots, not small manga tone dots.
Such is my experience with it. Hope it helps. XP I personally just size down the dot tones, realizing that yes they'll miore at 72dpi. But that's when you flaunt your high quality prints for all to buy. ^_~

This is a great tutorial. I'm definately going to have to try out your method of toning
One question. How do you get around working at 1200dpi killing your pc?
I think I'd just about manage to work at tokyopop dimensions with 1200dpi, but think my pc'd run slowly
