WATERCOLOR TUTORIAL PART 2:Preparing paper for paint.
---------------------------------
For this image:
I hope it's a helpful tutorial. >< Thank you to everyone who has requested a watercolor tutorial from me!
It is difficult to make one, a video camera mounted on a stand over the painting would probably be ideal. I can't really photograph how the paint and the water change and work. ;_; There is no replacement for having a teacher right in front of you, showing and instructing and describing.
I managed to not complain about not being good enough throughout the tutorial. GIVE ME THIS MOMENT, PLEASE. *SOB* Someday I'll make another watercolor tutorial when I am a better painter and have better instructions to give. I want to be MY teacher right now, and show you in her words and paintings how to make watercolor work. But I am not her. ;_;

You could use that too. c: I checked, my mechanical pencil is HB. I think I like this actually because it is LESS soft, and I don't want dark pencil lines, since they are not erasable after they are wet.

This is a beautiful reference and a great technique. Though being an avid fan of watercolor, this is such a hard one.
Apply color to wet paper has always scared me D: But this looks like a really beautiful way to blend colors. Im gonna have to try it!

It could be a very fun experiment. c:
Mostly what it does for me I think is it gets the colors to be richer and to have more atmosphere.

it's actually really nice to see this pop up just when I had been thinking "it would be nice to try watercolor again." Back in my life drawing (naked people) class we had one section where we used watercolor for our gestures and longer poses and stuff..but she wanted us to use like, croquil pens on the textured paper which didn't really work (I said fuck this and used my faber castell pens because I didn't have time for that shit), and she made us use like..ice cube trays for our water with minimal amounts of the paint already in it, the paper always crinkled, and argh. I was like, man, this can't be how you even remotely do water color, what is this. I would have never thought to soak the paper or anything. This really encourages me to try again (if I could find the muster to draw anything)

eeeew. I guess that could work for gesture drawings, but full illustrations ... NEEEEVEEEEER.
Maybe I should make a tutorial on how to actually stretch watercolor paper and prepare it to be ... actually good at being a painting surface. That seems to be the most frequent problem. HOW TO MAKE IT STOP RIPPLING OR TEARING or in other ways shitting.

it was still pretty brutal even for that
I don't think i've ever had a paper tearing problem, but the rippling was pretty bad (esp since it was with giant bamboo brushes too, HELLO WATER). I figured better paper it just wouldn't happen as much but the method you said makes way more since, just stretch the hell out of it to begin with

I did. I've been playing with a lot of different things with paint and stuff, but I can never get it to come out quite how i like. It's nice to see a piece like this on DA.
