Description
Kind of, sort of tutorial. It's more walk-through my painting process. I hope it will be useful to you.For constructing the knotworks - as I'm still learning that, I really don't feel entitled to give advice about it. Anyway, if you're interested in this art, I can recommend you two great books - Celtic art: Method of construction by George Bain nad Celtic knotwork by his son Ian Bain. The first book has more intuitive approach, although it's not always easy to understand. The second one is more technical, yet very systematic and comprehensible.

You're welcome Yes, the principles can be applied to digital works, why not. I actually used the gems just recently for a design for a poster at work

They most certainly are! I think I like the one by George Bain a little bit more - I prefer the looser style

I cant tell you how helpful this has been. I would love to do a similar style of image so that way I can try to follow the step by step. I will of course reference not only the original you did of this but also the step by step and link back to your gallery.
It would be great once I get it posted and referenced to have you do a full critique on my piece so that way I can really start to learn

This tutorial is wonderful! But I have a question. If you're going to highlight tiny areas, what would you suggest to apply the white goache with?

Glad you like it. I apply white gouache with tiny brushes Most of my brushes are tiny anyway

I see, thanks so much for replying. I have a bad habit of drawing small heads, with TINY eyes. So I resort to using a toothpick in white poster colour

Toothpick might work too, or a needle

I do! Only when it comes to painting, though Plus I've already found a quicker way of painting the knotworks
I am too lazy to put it in a tutorial, though.
