Description Kind of, sort of tutorial. It's more walk-through my painting process. I hope it will be useful to you.
For constructing the knotworks - as I'm still learning that, I really don't feel entitled to give advice about it. Anyway, if you're interested in this art, I can recommend you two great books - Celtic art: Method of construction by George Bain nad Celtic knotwork by his son Ian Bain. The first book has more intuitive approach, although it's not always easy to understand. The second one is more technical, yet very systematic and comprehensible.

Btw... Err... How much is usually masking fluid, and how is it called in Czech? So I don't feel like an idiot looking for it And also to know if they're not trying to sell me something too expensive...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucieOn In reply to Lawenta [2009-06-06 17:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Maskovací kapalina The price varies, I use Schmincke's masking fluid, which is quite pricey (about 100 Kč, but it's very nice to work with, because it's really fluid, not a gum. I tried something cheaper before (50 Kč or so), and it was completely useless, because it wasn't liquid at all, it was just like a gum :-/ I think, that for the white dots you can use gouache or even white tempera, if you don't want to spent money for the masking fluid.

Lawenta In reply to LucieOn [2009-06-06 17:46:46 +0000 UTC]

Ach
Or just glue there tiny dots of paper
I guess it depends on whether the fluid can go bad. I really don't paint (or draw on that matter) often, so buying something I'd use once before I have to buy a new one doesn't seem such a good idea. But if it lasts years, that's another story

I'm not quite sure, but I think it doesn't last very long... certainly not for years :-/

This might be a silly question, but when you paint in layers, do you mix the colour and paint it directly on, or do you wet the page first? I seem to have a lot of difficultly building up colour intensity in a gradient because I usually end up flooding the whole place with colour or making it look extremely unnatural (it jumps from one colour to another). I'm sorry if my description is confusing.

Thanks for writing the tutorial! It was extremely useful and interesting. I really admire your patience with knotwork... and all those layers of watercolour Great work

LucieOn In reply to Lainiexox [2009-06-05 19:55:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not quite sure about the question, but I try to desribe how I paint. I usually don't wet the paper (which probably isn't the best idea). Wetting the paper is great for compact coloured area, though. When I use this, it's only for first washes and almost only for background. Than I paint layer over layer - and the most important thing is to wait for one layer of colour to dry! It has to be completely dry before you start painting another layer, otherwise it create only a messy blur.
For smaller areas, especially on main objects, I don't wet the paper at all. And again, I always wait till the area I'm currently painting is completely dry.

THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL IT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM!!!

I love this tutorial. I'm going to use it in my watercolors and in my painting on clay with mason stains.

I guess I'll use shellac resist instead of masking fluid, since masking fluid is not going to work too good over white glaze.
