Description Kind of, sort of tutorial. It's more walk-through my painting process. I hope it will be useful to you.
For constructing the knotworks - as I'm still learning that, I really don't feel entitled to give advice about it. Anyway, if you're interested in this art, I can recommend you two great books - Celtic art: Method of construction by George Bain nad Celtic knotwork by his son Ian Bain. The first book has more intuitive approach, although it's not always easy to understand. The second one is more technical, yet very systematic and comprehensible.

Awesome tutorial! Very clear, I see now how many layers you use to achieve dark tones! I am so impatient, and always wondered how you could achieve those dark colours in watercolours...

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
I'm also impatient, I'm literally in anguish when I have to wait for the layer of colour to dry... but it pays off

oh my god, so beautiful, you must be a watercolor genius. I always try to paint in watercolor, but it's no use, I don't really know how to use it so I end up sticking with color pencils. Well done

You've coined a new word! Paintience. a combination of the word paint and the word patience, which is exactly what we painters need.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucieOn In reply to Ridira [2009-10-16 18:51:31 +0000 UTC]

Vypadá to ůžasně propracovaně a přitom je to tradiční technika.

tucc In reply to ??? [2009-10-04 22:54:13 +0000 UTC]

amazing tutorial. it was very helpfull!!
the one part im not understanding well is the tracing your pencil sketch. how do you do that? because the watercolor paper is glued to prevent curling up, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucieOn In reply to tucc [2009-10-05 07:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Glued? You mean like with other papers, together? I have single sheets, but it doesn't matter. I make a sketch on a regular printing paper. I reverse it, scribble with a soft pencil on this side so the sketch on the other side is "covered" by this scribbling - then reverse it again, put it on watercolour paper (the sketch is on top and the scribbled side of paper lies on the watercolour paper). Ten I re-trace the sketch.
Of course, this is optional, it just way of work I came along You may draw a sketch right onto watercolour paper, or you don't have to make a sketch at all, it's you choice
I hope it's understandable now. I really tried my best to explain the process

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tucc In reply to LucieOn [2009-10-05 19:21:32 +0000 UTC]

i think i know what you mean. does it work? id love to try it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucieOn In reply to tucc [2009-10-05 19:26:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I use it pretty regularly, so for me it does
When I make a sketch, I have to have it very precise, and I erase a lot - which would destroy my watercolour paper. So it's pretty useful for me to have a sketch aside like this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tucc In reply to LucieOn [2009-10-05 20:22:03 +0000 UTC]

i really hope this techniqye works for me! i think the sketching part is the most important and the most difficult. i erase alot too and it just really ruins the paper

I'm just starting with watercolors and this tutorial helped me understand the reasons behind every wash... I'm nos used to lay wash after wash, so this means a lot.. Thanks! and sorry 'bout my crappy english

MMWoodcock [2009-08-30 12:30:51 +0000 UTC]

ahh so you do paint in layers no wonder my pictures look so washy i have no patience

but this is a really neat tutorial and is very straight forward, at least for me

Maybe i will practice more using this tutorial i just believe my color palette is limited i am sorry that you had to start all over there from the first picture
i dislike it when that's happened, i though i rarely ever throw away anything i messed up when its almost finished XD

the second one still came out quite nice but i noticed you left out a green gem near the tail and the background seems to have darker edges than the first one thanks for the tutorial

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucieOn In reply to MMWoodcock [2009-08-30 16:56:57 +0000 UTC]

Yup. I do. In many layers
I'm glad the tutorial seems useful to you.
I don't like to create something that isn't as good as it might to be, even if I have to rework the whole thing from beginning. I'm weird that way
Yup, I left it out - I just forget. I added some more stones into the actual knotwork, though.
Np.

Thank you for sharing the tips. Tried my hands on some of them here [link] and enjoyed it very much

I bought the masking fluid at the end, by the way - found out I'm simply not good enough yet to draw the background freely without covering the stones and the pendant. Well, I'm a beginner. I need all help I can get
