Description
I wanted to show you the step by step process of a watercolor painting. Prismacolor pencils were used as well!
About half a roll of artist tape was gone though with this tutorial, because I had to keep scanning it in as I went. Watercolor paper buckles if you don't keep it strapped down onto a hard surface.
If you have any questions please ask! Enjoy!

Thamks for answering my question! I'm just putting a new comment up because I don't want your helpful reply to get deleted from my inbox.
I had no idea that watercolor paint could be applied to dry paper. I just thought the stuff had to be soaking wet (That's what my teacher would do. She was pretty crazy with the wetness. Wet paper, wet paint, wet brush..all at once!).

No problem
The only time I wet down the paper before I apply the paint is if I want the colors to bleed everywhere. Some people do this with acrylic dyes or watercolors before they apply an actual painting on top. There are so many different things you can do with watercolors!

Okay, this is going to sound dumb, but my paint tends to spread everywhere. I usually ruin the whole thing. How do you stop the colors from going places that they shouldn't be?

Aikya In reply to EzziraVenture [2010-11-05 02:11:43 +0000 UTC]
That usually depends on how much water you have on your brush when you apply the paint to the paper. I noticed that too, so when I wanted more control over where the paint would spread, I just made sure I put a smaller quantity of water and paint on my brush. The more water and less paint, the less saturated your color will be, where if you have more paint on your brush and less water, the more pigment you will be able to put down.
It was really just a mater of experimenting with how much of both water and paint I wanted to have on my brush, and then seeing the way it applied to the paper.
Also, you will have more control if you apply your brush to DRY paper, versus if you apply it to WET paper. Wet paper will cause your colors to spread (bleed) all over the place. This can make some pretty neat effects, especially if you add salt crystals. But if you want more control, wait until the paper dries (if you have already applied some wet paint down) before you add different or more colors. You have to be very patient with watercolors.
I hope that helps!

Your style kind of reminds me of Stephanie Pui-Mun Law's. I bought one of her books and I really like it. Very useful. Your tutorial was easy to understand and the finished work is very graceful. I think I may add you to my watch list.

What sort of watercolours do you usually use? I love watercolour but haven't done much of it. I think it'd be fun to experiment with though.
Very beautiful results, by the way.

This technique creates a wonderful effect, I just love it too much. Your work is nicely done.
I have a picture on my mind and I think I'll give it a try with this technique. I have never used watercolour before, I think I will practice on some doodles before. Any extra tip for a complete newbie?

And the tutorial. I have always wondered how the background colour should be applied. And that one can use clored pencils I never even considered. I am so lame.
But this tutorial is excellent.

Hahaha, I'd forgotten how to use watercolour effectively, but reading this and just looking over it, even, has helped me greatly in remembering! Perhaps tomorrow I will get out my watercolour paint and paper, and see what I can create with it...

Yay! I'm glad you like this!
I was surprised at how little time it took to make. The hardest thing was when I had to keep scanning it into the computer and then tape it back down so the paper wouldn't buckle. He's a happy lionfish merman
Yes I'd like to see you work with watercolors! If anything you can use them for a stress reliever

I have yet to master the paper buckling though......

Thank you ^^
I've worked with watercolor pencils before, but they weren't used for this picture, I used Prismacolor-they're wax based so they repel water, which can be both good and bad. Watercolor pencils are so neat! I'll have to save up for a set of those
Do you tape down your paper? There is a specific type of artist tape you can get so it won't rip your paper to shreds when you strip it off.

InKibus In reply to Aikya [2008-06-07 02:28:08 +0000 UTC]
I haven't taped my paper down much at all.
I have basic masking tape, but I know how much that can tear off.

Masking tape is alright if you remove it really slowly and at an angle that isn't too harsh. At least, that's what I've found
