December 14,2010Public version 3.1a
-Added ability to enable/disable the start tips with regfiles.
-When using Visa, it would still try and apply userframes and start tips. (I missed this one in 3.1)
These are the only two changes in 3.1a. If 3.1 worked for you, then you should NOT install this. Well you can if you want but there is no new features.
I also included StartOrbz 2.1, since this loaded up fine for most people.
There really isnt much more to do with StartOrbz, so only expect bug fixes. If you have suggestions, please let me know. As always, post any bugs, comments, or suggestions.

hi there,
i used this before and it worked a charm.
windows did one of its stupid updates the other day and when i turned my computer back on the start orb was back to the default one.
i went to run your program again but it crashes as soon as it launches just displaying a black box where the program should be.
any suggestions or solution's?

Mmmm, it says when I start it that vista support won't work unless I have patched the right system files or something, and that it won't do it for me.
What the heck am I supposed to do?

Hey Blizo the Program is awesome, however I noticed that when I have finished creating an ORB and I go back into edit it, it makes the image about half the size it was before I started editing?? (It probably has nothing to do with it but I'm running Windows 7 64-bit) it does this every time I goto edit it, which is really quite annoying considering if I edit it: 1 time = half; 2 times = Quater; 3 times = eighth.. etc. So far I have gotten around this by reimporting my original image and applying the same attributes to it before I begin to tweak with them.

its made explorerframe.dll when i start my PC ... i cant do anything i have black screen !!!!!!

StartOrbz doesnt touch the explorerframe.dll at all. Only explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui
You need to give me more information.
First, did you get any kind of error when you applied an orb?
When you restarted, did you get the logon screen? Did you see the windows flag animations?
Can you get the taskbar to appear whe you press ctrl+alt+delete?
Can you get into safemode?
The more info you give me, the better I can help you.

Ok guys. Stop sending me Notes about Kishan's W7SBC. Im glad he added the start tips and modding in memory. Good for him.
My primary focus is on AuthinaUI. Once thats done, I will start working on StartOrbz 4.0 again. I got HUGE ideas.
I got one more bug to fix in StartOrbz (drop shadow bug), once thats done I will release 3.1c.

When trying to restore to the default windows orb it just uses a previously used custom orb. Does anybody have a fix for this? Thanks.

That means you previously had a custom orb applied when you first ran StartOrbz. If you used another app before StartOrbz, then use that to restore your explorer.exe.
You can also do a sfc /scannow. That will replace all system files with default ones.
You an also look in the windows folder and see if you have any other explorer backups. I cant tell you what to use cuz Im not sure what its named. Just look for any variation of explorer.exe

About the start tips, I found that you need to rebuild the MUI cache to get it show the new tip. There is no quick and easy way to do it. There is only one tool to do it and its coded by microsoft. So I cant simply tell it to only rebuild the explorer.exe.mui file, it has to rebuild the entire windows 7 mui cache. This can take some time. But at least its a start and now I can change the start tip everytime. Sure I might have to restart windows but at least it works!
So start tips will remain on all future builds!
Let me fix a few bugs that ~zicox reported and I will release StartOrbz 3.2 as soon as I can!

Thank you dear Blizo, I just helped out where he could be the problem that prevented a successful operation on win7x64 to use this program to all and imho I think it's really useful and functional ..
However the new version works fine, there are small things to fix but 80% is made ..
I just think Blizo is ready to make available as soon as possible ..
and then we're testing a great program for logon editor, authinaUI that seems really ok ..

Oh, the MUI cache rebuilder file is called mcbuilder.exe. Its located in the system32 folder. So those of you who can run 3.1b can try that if the tips are not working. You might have to restart. I found that as soon as I run the tool, all future changes are instant. All you have to do is run it and it will do its thing. You just gotta wait for it to rebuild which can take a while.
I will google around to see if there is an API that I can use to only update a certain MUI file.

Im still waiting for someone with the render bug or x64 issue to send me a note with their email so I can send them a test build.
I havnt release yet because no one wants to help fix it. I have loaded Vista x64, x86 and Win7 x64, x86 with no issues. StartOrbz works fine on my end , but I want to make sure I fixed those issues.
Again, Im not going to release untill I get help. It wont take more than a few minutes of your time.

Don't use this program. It is full of bugs, it messed up my explorer.exe, I had to restore from a backup with task manager after it crashed right during the time it was supposed to make a backup. Use W7SBC Orb Changer for orb changing, it is way more stable, easy to use and uses BMP files which are higher in quality.

Its official. Im removing the start tip feature. I installed 4 os's and not one changed the tip. I checked and the mui file is being written to, but for some reason windows wont change it everytime. I have gotten it to change once in a while.
Too unpredictable, so its getting yanked. I will save the source just in case a fix is found.

I just installed win 7 x64 with spanish lang pack. No problems loading or applying.
Maybe its the cpu? Im running an amd64, what about you guys (people with loading problems)?

hi blizo,i download new version 3.1a but nothing,in my win7x64 again same problem,start the appz,run it in taskbar but nothing,do not work..
also i use disable/enable reg tip,same problem..appz remain only in taskbar..
start orb 2.1 runs very well,no problem in win7x64..
if you want i can help you to try debug or other version to find the bug..

Blizo----I'm wondering: Can 2.1 save the orbs as a bmp file rather than a png? People are telling me that the ones I made aren't working for them because of the png file extension. Of course, if they just use your tool, it'll work (and I've included this info in my uploads), but it won't work with other orb-changers.
I still like this tool very much, and thank you again for the share!

It does not. PNG only. I totally relaxed the restrictions in 3.0.
HOWEVER, you can convert the image to an alpha bitmap and then resize it to the proper size.
Kishan is the author of the other start orb changers. I will see if he wants the code to be able to apply png orbs.
Or you could ask him yourself as a feature request. Either way I will help him.

As long as people (running Win7) use your 2.1 SO Maker there's no problem.....I'm still gonna make them and upload them; I've just included in the preview window that they are .png files and must be applied with your tool. That's good enough for me!
