Description
It bothers me so much when someone says they can't achieve something just because they're a certain age. Okay, yes, if you're 12 and trying to get a driver's license, that won't happen because of the law, but if it's an every day thing such as drawing or getting better at a sport, don't use your age to bring you down, or use as an excuse as to how good or bad you are."I know I'm bad at passing the ball, but I'm only ten! People usually don't get better until their older!"
"I know this drawing sucks, but it's because I'm still young! Good artists are usually over twenty!"
"What do you mean I suck at making dinner? I'm fifteen, not a professional chef!"
You can get better. You can always get better at something, no matter what your age is. Using your age to say your bad at it won't get you anywhere, especially if you just keep saying that all your life. You won't improve that way.
Age is a number, that really is all it is. All it's useful for is for saying how long you've been alive, and being legal to do certain things according to laws. Is it an excuse? No.
Don't use your age as an excuse. I really don't give a damn about your age, I just care what you're doing with your life.

Not always.
But in this case, it is.
Underage deviants shouldn't be on this site.
And if they give out their age, they're asking to get banned.

What do you mean?
I know some rules are better if unfollowed, but give me a reason why underage deviants should be on the site. I didn't choose the rule, but the content does get edgy on here.
The fact that you choose to argue on this specific topic tells me that you may be underage.
Why else would you stick up against this rule?

I don't see any reason to report them though.
Incorrect assumption.
I generally dislike and disagree with a lot of rules and laws...

I have mixed feelings on it.
I report them as soon as I notice them... but think about it. If I don't report them, they may eventually get reported.
And I actually have come across some really nice art from underage deviants on here. Better to report them ahead of time before they waste more time making art that they may eventually loose.

That's a low level of reasoning.
You would report them without warning them to save their art first...?
It is likely that it is not only saved on DA, but if that is not the case you have destroyed someone's piece of art.

Okay, as long as you learned.
I'm sure there's many good artists under age 13 though.
Sorry if my message seemed a bit rude.
I was just proving a point.

The same goes for people who say "I can't improve, I'm too old."
I used to have that attitude about ballet. I started at age 12 and for the longest time, thought "I'll never be any good, I'm too old". Now I know that I'm never too old to improve on my skills in anything, no matter how "old" I am.

Well my case is sort of different. Cause I wish I could start taking art classes when I was younger (meaning sixth grade).
Then again, my memories of my elementary years are still quite gone. I don't even remember when I started to draw other than the time when I was two and I doodled the family Tv (We got a new on after that and no sharpies from then). Yeah, my memory bank is way low on childhood years. I wasted my 8th grade year (cause no art classes in school that time) just trying to leave all that drama rather than drawing occasionally and decreasing my stress.
And now I'm a junior that has taken two art classes in my sophomore year trying to get back on track. But first, I gotta decrease internet time cause that's my major problem now.

I agree partially, but the older you are, the more experience you have, yes you can have determination but you're not going to be good right away... It takes a lot of time and practice to get better, which is why all of the younger artists are usually terrible, but at least they're trying~

I've never used my age as an excuse, I just turned fourteen... You can only really rank someone on their determination Some people start drawing late, and some early, but they all start off drawing stick men so perhaps it would be better to use how long you've been drawing for as an excuse. x-D Anywho you should't need to make excuses, just practise! >:-3 I for one am aware that I suck but practice makes perfect and constructive criticism just gives you more things to work to perfect.

Yeah, but 10 years old child have smaller chances to draw great than 20 years old person, don't you think ^^? And it would be stupid to say to an child "hahah your drawings are ugly".

The only way age is a factor is if you're two and have the artistic ability of Da Vinci. Then we might be onto something.

I'm 14 and I never used my age as an excuse. I know that there are thousands of much better artists of the same age. Age doesn't matter. Someone may have discovered art much earlier than you, that's all! Or maybe they are not as lazy as you and really work? Then, maybe, they have some advantages -- their parents are artists, they have good art school around.
I remember time when I lied about my age to some sort of internet community. I left it, and desperately want to return! I thought nobody will take me seriously, but I became very respected. I regret about it a lot.

That's what people should always keep in mind when I person is 'better' at making art at younger ages, I think. Like you said, discovering earlier, not as lazy or more determined can get you places faster.
I don't really lie about my age, I just don't say it often. It's funny not saying it anyway, because then I'm usually guessed to be around 18-20-year-old, which is really off.

Same with people who think they're better at something because they're older. Just because you're older doesn't mean you're better T_T Just because you're younger doesn't mean you're worse.

EpicKD In reply to PaxiPeanut [2011-09-29 04:50:28 +0000 UTC]
I disagree. The fact that you are older often means you are 'better', frankly because they've had more time to learn and experience. Take a 2nd grader and a 6th grader, the 6th grader is usually smarter.
Of course, there is always exceptions, for example when someone say they are smarter then others BECAUSE they are older - those people are the real nubskulls.
Now don't flame me because I'm 17 when I'm writing this.

I'm not talking about booksmarts, I'm talking about common sense. Having common sense doesn't have much to do with your age; what you've witnessed, been through, and learned have to do with it.

I don't think age should even be considered, because some people are really smart for their age, and some adults are idiots.
My intention is not to offend anyone in any way. I am here to try to comment constructively.

Ugh agreed. I'm 14 and recently took my age down so people would stop watching me solely because of my age combined with my art. Plus it's awkward replying to people's comments who are older than me and going 'Wow, you're only 14? /watches'
Age really doesn't matter. ._.

Ah, see I'm 14 too and that's why I took down my age. Seeing those "You're that young and on dA? gtfo" or "Wow! So young and talented!" and such was irritating to read, along with things like people not wanting to watch someone so young, or not taking them seriously. It's an age, get over it.
By the way, I was just creeping your gallery. Holy crap I love your paintings!
