1. Happy, playful
An obvious emotion if I ever saw one. Nami's eyes and mouth are wide open and the corners of her mouth curl up in a smile. You can also make her ears and whiskers point up, but in this case I decided to have only one of each point up. It seems to express a playful mood.
2. Happy, confident, content, mocking
Jaws can also be happy, but this time it's a little bit less exhuberant. His mouth is closed and he also seems to squint a little. This expression may also be used to convey confidence or a mocking attitude. Notice how assymmetrical his face is. It conveys his cocky attitude.
3. Surprised, disappointed, confused
Nami is looking at something which surprised or confused her. Her mouth has become smaller and her eyebrows are closer to her eyes. I know Rattata doesn't have eyebrows, but I find it hard to express emotions without them...
4. Shocked, unpleasantly surpised, scared
Jaws' expression is slightly more extreme. His mouth dropped open and his pupils contracted in shock. He may even be getting a little scared.
5. Scared
Something big is looming over her, and she's scared... Her pupils are also contracted and her ears and whiskers point down.
6. Angry, irritated, adamant, distrustful
Jaws is ready to snap and doesn't trust the person he's looking at (you!). So he's staring at you from the corner of his eyes. The corners of his mouth down are pulled down.
7. Angry, irritated, adamant, reluctant
Pulling the face right down, so Nami's pupils are located at the top of her eyes, gives her an angry expression. She's ready to fight if she has to.
8. Furious, angry, aggressive, raging, defiant
Jaws has been driven into a corner and reacts fiercely to some unknown threat. Better stay away from those teeth! Some dramatic foreshortening completes the illusion of Jaws facing a much bigger and stronger foe.
9. Sad, heartbroken, regretful
Tears, tears, tons of tears! Making Nami look back over her shoulder creates the impression that she is leaving someone behind.
10. Broken, sad, defeated, exhausted
The common concesus is that males are not supposed to express strong emotions, while females can. Personally, I don't really agree, but if you want to express a more restrained version of sadness, bow the head down, point eyes, ears, mouth and whiskers down and close the eyes. You can either include small tears or leave them out.
11. Relieved, happy, pleasantly surprised
I'm not really happy with the way this turned out, but still. Relief is sort of like a transition between sadness and hapiness. So Nami's eyes and whiskers point down, but her mouth and ears point up. See? She's transitional.
12. Relieved, emotional
I felt bad about saying males are not supposed to be emotional. Sometimes a guy really just wants to let it all out. So does Jaws, even though he's not ready to admit it yet. He can't keep a straight face, hence the zig-zag-mouth and the small tears. This is probably my favourite expression so far...
