Description Starcraft 2: Terran Command Center & Upgrades

The Command Center was a solid month of work. Design decisions constantly changed the landscape of the multiplayer art needs in Starcraft 2, and when the dust settled the Command Center revision was a monster task.

The Orbital Command functions were orginally on the Sensor Tower (the M.U.L.E. wasn't invented yet though...), and the Planetary Fortress was also an independent building enabled by the Factory. The designers decided to make these features building upgrades to the Command Center, rather than 2 stand alone buildings.

The task of making the Command Center transform into 2 other modes, while not interfering with the ability to lift off and fly required a good deal of planning and proper execution. The Command Center transformation to Planetary Fortress defined most of the work, since the shape changes the most during that transformation. Once all those details were worked out the Orbital Command mode was a quick (sadly) job of milking one more variation work. Compared to the early versions, the final art gets the job done, but I really wouldn't mind taking another pass at the Orbital Command and sexing it up a bit.

I'd say "maybe in your spare time", but if you're as busy as I think you are at work...

Seriously, though, it would be nice to see your ideas on how some of these should have looked... Maybe if we all asked Blizzard very nicely...?

logical falacy. many games like halo wars, tib wars and generals use realistic models without these problems.

I was just curious if there were other 'upgrades' to the command center like the reactor, orbital, and fortress mode that got to the modelling stage. Understand if you can't mention those things, but hey.

Also, one of the things I'm most looking forward to is the art that will come with Heart of the Swarm. That and the plot. (Because that's completely related to command centres, isn't it?) Can we expect an update to your account including all the stuff you worked on for it?

There were no other stages to the Command Center, we finalized the art in a single pass which is a relief considering the complexity of this building.

Once HotS releases there will definitely be another art gallery update. However I don't have as much to show since I've been on Blizzard All-Stars for the past year or so.

Did you do the Single-player only Reactor-Command Center as well? The one allowing you to produce 2 SCV's at once.

No kidding! All the flight animations are there for Planetary Fortress mode but the designers had their concerns about putting that ability on the Fortress. I wish we would have tested it atleast, made the flying speed slower or something...

If you think about it, a flying Planetary Fortress would actually look really odd. Without wings, buildings like those would just flop over due to the sheer weight of their Iblis Cannons!
