Description Starcraft 2: Zerg Compare SC1 - SC2
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park
Animated by Jay Hathaway

This was just for fun! The graphical improvements between games are marginal. The updated visuals are based on the great concept work of Mr.--Jack: [link]

I had a nerdgasm when I heard about the guardian XD

So I'm guessing the primals found the guardian's trait when the swarm visited Zerus and they started producing them OR you guys changed the guardian from originally being in the swarm into a primal

The simple answer is there wasn't time to make completely new art, so the decision was made to repaint the Guardian so the Primal's had more creatures in their army.

So most of the things that lacks in HOTS was because of time constraint, right?

Yep! When you're running out of time, cut all the cosmetic improvements!

i like the origional devourer and guardian better. the devourer looked better without all the cartoony spikes. it also had 2 eyes and little arms. again the guardian had a better head in sc 1 and less goofy spikes

I am one of the guys working on the remake of the SC1 campaigns, and this is awesome! Thank you very much for this, do not hesitate to make Protoss ones if you ever get the chance!

Could you provide a link? That would be something I'd like to play, when it's ready, of course.

I've been keeping an eye on your thread, nice work so far, and thanks for the campaign appreciation!

I really hope there is an opportunity to get all the retired units back in the game, we'll see what happens!

Awesome as always do you sculpt them as well? Also is there anywhere that shows the Starcraft 2 unit creation workflow or is that not to be shared?

PoorGent In reply to StormAndy [2013-04-02 08:55:27 +0000 UTC]

I imagine the process is pretty standard.

1.Create concept art to reference.
2.Create base model (using maya or blender or whatever) starting with large base shapes (spheres, pyramids, cylinders, etc.) and then refining them.
3.Port it over to z-brush for fine detailing (these models are relatively low poly though so it's probably used only for a few bumps and grooves if at all)
4.Create textures and bump maps.
5.Render and done.

They probably also construct skeletons for animating. Though this is also a step that isn't entirely necessary depending upon the model and it's use.

I was curious to see the starcraft 2 units workflow, what you've just said is kind of equivalent to saying this is how a acrylic painter paints

pick up paper
sketch
acrylic and paint
sealent/framed

This reveals nothing about the passes and techniques used, the only part you just can't guess or know without seeing it.

Sadly I cannot share the whole process.

AAAAhhhh!! Nerdgasm!!!! Part of me doesn't want any spoilers but if these units are back with an appearance of a classic swarm somewhere in SC2, I can die happy.

For fun or not, thanks for doing this. It's neat to see the differences. Reminds me of how huge the graphical difference between one and two is.
