Description Starcraft 2: Zerg Overmind
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted park!
Animated by Trevor Jacobs & Allen Dilling?

The Zerg Overmind was a very nostalgic piece of artwork to create. Although it was known on the development team for quite some time that the single player campaign would have a small Protoss arc, I had no idea where it would take us. It was quite a pleasant surprise to learn the Protoss hero Zeratul would be visiting the corpse of Starcraft 1's main antagonist on the now infested Protoss homeworld of Aiur.

The amount of map real estate the design team granted the Overmind was completely impressive, It was by far the largest Zerg structure we'd created. From a redesign standpoint, the Overmind design from Starcraft 1 was rather vague. The Starcraft 1 sprite artwork and the pre-rendered cinematic versions were quite unalike from each other. The rational behind this redesign was to feature the most distinct SC1 features while allowing enough areas for the textures to be shown off and compared to the new Zerg buildings.

The giant eyeball was another liberty taken with the new art. The thought was it seemed more responsive and alive than a giant exposed brain.

It was great to see the Overmind get a make-over for Starcraft 2.

Too bad we didn't get to see any Cerebrates.

If you think about it, the new Evolution Chamber design resembles a Cerebrate, so it could be that the Zerg recycled the intelligence of the Cerebrate design and merged it with their Evolution Chamber for more efficient creation of mutations.

My question is... what happen to the Cerebrate that helped Kerrigan in BW?
The others characters what happen to them we know or is pretty obvius.

-Magistrate of ep 1: Probably is Horner, the Magistrate and Horner have a lot in common, both was Confederates and then left for SoK, when Kerrigan was left to the Zerg, they formed with Raynor the Raynor's Raiders, and in Flashpoint novel we see Horner give orders to Raynor and Kerrigan just like we did in SC1, Horner know a lot about Kerrigan and Raynor history even if he never appear in SC1 and where appear Horner don't appear the Magistrate and vice versa, quite obvius they are the same guy.
-Cerebrate of ep 2: Killed by Tassadar (confirmed in the Queen of Blades novel)
-Executor of ep 3: Is Artanis
-Executor of ep 4: Probably is Selendis
-Captain of ep 5: Probably dead after BW by Kerrigan's Swarm
-Cerebrate of ep 6: totally mystery, I know he even helped Kerrigan with some infestation experiment, but what happen to him never was clear... I thinked he was Kaloth, but with HotS look like Abathur don't know who is Kaloth, so I think he is not Kaloth, since Abathur say Stukov was created by someone more expert then him (Kaloth (and I was quite surprised that in LotV Kaloth didn't appear, that quote of Abathur let me think that Kaloth would appear in LotV))

Much more intimidating than the original look of the over mind in sc1 and creeper. I always thought of the overmind like an oversized beholder / kraken.

Definitely, I'm glad the Overmind got updated and made a little bit more dangerous looking. The SC1 version just looked like a zit.

Lol then I guess Tassadar popped the great malevolent zit. Protoss ache medicine more powerful than any zerg zit.

Giant eyeball... This is... Wheatley! Infested by the Zerg and turned into their Overmind...

Jeez, I really should stop playing sci-fi XD

I really love this redesign, especially the giant eyeball - it seems to fit the character, this huge lump of biomass controlling Zerg swarms throughout the galaxy, and with the eyeball staring into space it's like it's literally keeping a watchful eye on them.. I don't know how much he was actually able to see with it, but it's a very cool design anyway.

It was kind of strange how the Overmind's portrait in sc1 looked similar to a human eyeball (at least I thought so), I like how this model makes it all look more "alien".

The giant eyeball had an interesting implementation. Samwise wanted something more visceral than the human eyeball from Starcraft 1, and charged one of our portrait modelers Jesse Brophy to create the new design. When we made the in-game model, we incorporated the new eyeball in place of the brain. Something about it just worked, it seems so much more disturbing, and I agree with you that the idea of this thing just staring into space leaves quite an impression.

Boarguts In reply to artistafrustrado [2011-11-07 18:02:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! The main goal was to try and make the scale as epic as it appeared in those final cinematics of Starcraft!

When I first played that mission and I first found out that we were going back to Aiur, I was like, "woa... this is heavy"

I agree, and it's fun to revisit those old locations. The Overmind's first model was just a bit larger than the Terran Command Center, thankfully when we did the second pass we were able to crank up the scale to what you see in game and make something truly epic!

if you play through the protoss side-missions from the campaign, the last protoss mission shows the overmind, back when he was alive, fully animated. it does, indeed look awesome, and made me horrifically depressed that he died. :<
