Description Starcraft 2: Zerg Devourer
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway

The Devourer was last seen in the Staracraft: Boord War expansion and then retired. Promptly after shipping SC2: Wings of Liberty many of the Zerg units that didn't return from the Brood War were concepted [link] and modeled in anticipation for including them in the Zerg expansion. Unfortunately this artwork only appears in the game as an easter-egg.

Wish they would make an official "Brood War" mode in SC2, with all races using the original SC2 units and stats, while still using the starcraft 2 engine(not being limited to 12 units per group, etc.)

The Zerg Devourer, Guardian, and Mutalisk where an awesome air force composition for the zerg.

Plus, adding the triple condiments(ensnare, plague, and Devourer spores) to Protoss and Terran deathballsΒ before sending in your own forces to finish the job was pretty great.Β

There is a fan-made remake of the campaigns from SC1 to BW.
www.cinemablend.com/games/Star…

Although, I'm hoping for an official BW mode, for ladder/competitive purposes, or even just for custom maps. A search in Arcade reveals none, minus an incomplete unit tester using BW units.

Although, I must say, the current SCII line up is just as awesome as the original. Although, since BW still has a huge following in places like Korea, I'm wondering if it would be in Blizzards best interest to pursue such a path?

Congrats on getting this and the Guardian in for Abathur in Allied Commanders mode, the Devourer is one of my favorite zerg units. Your rendition embodies all of the classic zerg awesomeness that was not observable in two dimensions!

Why the sc 1 units don't appear in the campaign ? in WoL we have all units back but in hots we don't have them. Even no Nydus. But i don't understand it. They say that nydus was removed because air to air fight in not cool. But the Devourer had an attack ground upgrade in the campaign.

Ooh and if soul finish the retexture. Is there a change that blizzard will add them in future patches ? (with his permission)

Anyway, Do you know something about the Corsair ? There are alone sounds in the editor. But no model.

Boarguts In reply to noobkop7 [2013-04-02 06:54:20 +0000 UTC]

Part of the reason is we didn't have as many missions in HotS, while WoL had plenty of extra opportunities to reintroduce the retired units. But keep in mind the Valkyrie didn't return for the Terran. The fewer missions didn't give us a place to feature all these units, WoL lets almost every unit have a specific mission to showcase it's usefulness.

I agree that the missing units in HotS are quite alarming. I missed the anti-air flyers quite severely.

Scourge actually appeared in HotS, but in a different form. They were spawned from nests in the mission Fire in the Sky I believe. Is there any info on that you can tell us?

The Devourer looks absolutely fantastic. I really really hope you can convince Blizzard to add them into LotV. Are they whole units in the map editor, with animated attacks and everything?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to demolij [2013-03-28 06:00:00 +0000 UTC]

I don't really have any info on the Scourge Nest, it was completely off my radar. I do find it odd that the Scourge don't have any resemblance to the traditional Scourge, and I'm assuming they were called Scourge simply because they function the same way.

The Devourer has quite a few animations ready to go, and I do hope they make an appearance in LotV... time will tell.

A couple of these things was an excellent way to troll a battlecruiser armada in BW. With people stacking so much, it was easy to make entire groups of those slow firing units hit even slower.

Boarguts In reply to EvilCleric [2013-03-18 21:16:31 +0000 UTC]

Totally! The Devourer is missed!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EvilCleric In reply to Boarguts [2013-03-18 23:19:20 +0000 UTC]

Speaking of missed units, the Valkyrie and the good old Scout ( the latter of which actually exists in the games). I miss my good old missile spam (Kept those damn scourge away from my cruisers) and the ability to shoot air and ground (Speaking of which I miss the Wraith too) It seems like the units are becoming super specialized in order to give the factions more identity. I can see how that works, but otherwise it's really annoying to have to spam a certain amount of X units to counter a wave of unit Y.

Mixed arms is king and all, but it's kinda hard to create a large but even amount of units when under pressure and that's not counting if you've managed to hold off enough to advance your tech.

Er....Sorry for the griping mate.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to EvilCleric [2013-03-19 05:44:08 +0000 UTC]

I hear you loud and clear on this one. One of the louder mandates for SC2 was each unit needs to be unique, and no 2 units should be mirror images of each other ability-wise (like the Human Footman/Orc Grunt in Warcraft 2). So there's where that specialization comes from.

I'm hell bent on getting the vintage stuff in at full capacity, so cross your finger!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EvilCleric In reply to Boarguts [2013-03-22 04:45:09 +0000 UTC]

Here's hoping. Heck I'm still wondering why the Scourge had to go as I used it a lot more than I've ever used banelings. Plus the mental image brought up by them were funny. Picture a couple dozen of these tiny flying critters holding off entire armadas of Carrier and Battlecruisers is rather funny, though the recent incarnation of the battlecruiser would probably fair far better since it can targets multiple units....I think. I tend to have them group fire and watch them so I'm not sure how the act on their own.

The Zerg anti-air was lacking in HotS! Some of the brutal missions I played left me really wishing they appeared in HotS, they would have been very appreciated!

I remember always thinking the Devourer looked like a giant black and team-color ball with a mouth. Here, I definitely see how it's a Mutalisk evolution, never saw that in the Guardian or Brood Lord though.

Very nice concept. What a shame that it is not used ingame. Couldn't it have been used as a unit of the primal zerg?

Boarguts In reply to Slit08 [2013-03-14 02:38:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure it could have been used as a Primal Zerg like the Guardian. I'm glad it wasn't though, even the Guardian felt like a cheap modification.

I feel as though the Corrupter is somewhat more of an "upgrade" compared to the Devourer. Corrupters function quite similarly to Devourers, so including them in Heart of the Swarm would be sorta redundant. Another thing I like to point out is that unlike Devourers, Corrupters as of Legacy of the Void are also an adequate response to demolition where units such as Lurkers and Banelings won't be eligible options.
