Description Starcraft 2: Zerg Extractor
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway

The Extractor went through only a couple revisions before being finalized. The first rendition was simply a adaptation of the Starcraft 1 artwork to 3d. The main flaw of this first design was the complexity of the differnt shapes and colors, it looked too busy and was too visually distracting. The final revision simplified the building's distinct elements and unified the Extractor with the rest of the Zerg structures.

*SUPER IMPORTANT UPDATE*

The giant B-Hole Ted and I lovingly embellished upon this building has been (re)discovered. Congratulations, and enjoy!

Hmm... now we know where the organic bits in terrazine REALLY come from, don't we?

Let the refried bean jokes begin!

No! No! Keep your zerg away from cheap microwave burritos! The smell alone would dissolve the poor terran marines' powered armor!

Only time will tell what the Zerg expansion will get in regards to hidden surprises...

I really liked how the previous design's building animation had been done similarly to a spider spinning its web was this part of what was too visually distracting or was it just the end model?

The distracting part is on the right track. Starcraft 1 crammed lots of detail into those little sprites which was a huge point of discussion when we started Starcraft 2. The detail read as grit and dirt, and when we made 3d artwork we were constantly told that it wasn't gritty enough.

I don't think Starcraft 1 intended to look that detailed, it was just a limitation of the artwork at the time...

So yeah, when we redid alot of these, the goal was to simply them as much as we could, so that's why the Extractor detial got nerfed.
