About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.

Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.

And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.

Features

  • More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
  • Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
  • Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
  • Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
  • Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
  • Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
  • Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
  • ...and many more!

Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.

FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.

Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

What browser are you using? And are you using any other styles or extensions that may interfere with the forum pages?

It's not too important; I'll tell you at a later date in a note. I've exams.

Just out of curiosity, what features require the user script? Since Konqueror doesn't seem to support user scripts, I think I'm limited to the CSS.

The script features formatting user signatures to separate them from the comment body. It replaces the double-dash with a horizontal line and makes signature text smaller. It does the same for the Message Centre and Notes. It's not extremely important.

PS: Here's a screencap of the mood button problem: [link]

But as I said, everything else minus the JavaScript feature works great.

I have a possible solution. Go to the 'Hover Mood Selector' section of the CSS and try replacing the two second-to-last lines (that contain '.browser' with these two lines:

#deviantART-v5 .deviousthought td.t2 .browser {height:0 !important;}
#deviantART-v5 .deviousthought td.t2:hover .browser
{height:auto !important;}

gnulinuxman In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-09-12 10:12:48 +0000 UTC]

OK, I just tried pasting those lines at the end of the section and that fixed it.

The magic part is, as long as I care about standards, then it'll work on all products that also care about standards.

Oh yeah, that's right--you don't mention IE at all, just Firefox, Opera, and now Konqueror.

gnulinuxman In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-09-11 22:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Really? That must explain why everything else worked! Wow, I had no idea you could do so much just by changing the stylesheet.

But I bet you are glad that DeviantTidy works almost perfectly in Konqueror I have a bunch of problems with it in Opera, but the CSS in Konqueror vs. the Firefox extension has very few visual differences outside of the signature divider. The only problem I have with it is with the mood box--it works perfectly, except that it shows a scrollbar over the right side of the Mood button. It's only a minor visual glitch, but otherwise it works almost as well as it does in Firefox.

I love that you've brought back the comment drop-down box - I really missed that. :)
I have an additional suggestion related to comments. Because this is a (blessedly) minimalistic layout, perhaps you could devise code that blocks the original comment box from appearing? Because when you click on the "Add yours" link to write a comment, there's a superfluous comment box below it. Just an idea.
Thanks for implementing my idea on the solid lines in notes! I love using this skin!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to MissingHorcrux [2007-09-01 20:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the suggestion. The reason why I don't remove the original comment box is just in case the script fails, in which case the user can still comment. I believe the original v5 system just left the bottom box where it was as well.

However, if you want to hack around with the script yourself, it would be very easy to hide the static reply box when the link is clicked by adding
document.getElementById("replybox").style.display="none";
to the link's onclick value.

Will this let me view 'favorite' pages again, dA is taking their sweet time to fix this bug: when you are logged on, you nothing displays on the favorite page beside the page numbers.

BoffinBrain In reply to mojaam [2007-08-25 23:10:58 +0000 UTC]

Those kinds of dA bugs can't be fixed using any kind of extension or script. You'll just have to wait until it's fixed, I'm afraid.

Ekk! I really like the whole click 'Add Yours' and a comment box appears, since it's what i've always wanted!

Problem: Moods don't work in Add Yours Comment box...

*sigh* Sorry, I couldn't squash the bug! D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Solitude12 [2007-08-22 21:53:47 +0000 UTC]

That's probably because the comment box script is a giant hack. I guess I'll just have to cover it up by hiding the mood box.

"Removed images from deviation navigation bar."

I don't even see the navigation bar o-o, I think it's been removed, since with or without deviantTIDY... no navigation bar! D:

BoffinBrain In reply to Solitude12 [2007-08-21 21:57:49 +0000 UTC]

It depends on how you browse. If you visit a deviation through the search pages or through the gallery, a cookie keeps track of how you got to the page, and shows the nav box above the deviation.

Started using it in Flock, the installation process is the same as FF, as far as file paths are concerned for placing the userContent.css file

BoffinBrain In reply to the-ace-chef [2007-08-22 00:51:56 +0000 UTC]

Good good. Since Flock is basically Firefox under the hood, I'd expect it to work a charm. Is there Greasemonkey for Flock?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

the-ace-chef In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-08-24 15:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, pretty much any extension for ff work on flock, it's sweet. Though DownThemAll wasn't working. I personally don't use greasemonkey, never found much use for it, and it seemed to slow me down a fair amount.

Did the way this code is used change? I use Opera and when this was featured a DD I'm sure I just downloaded a CSS file. That's all I needed.

I since lost the file and coming back things look a lot more complicated. I went to userstyles hoping to get the CSS, but when I checked the code all the rules begin with #deviantART-v5, so it doesn't work in Opera now unless I load a script to modify the HTML.

Previously it worked without a script, and now it doesn't
