A coin that commemorates the founding of Constantinopolis,from 4th century.

This coin cost me $11.Diameter about 15mm.

The obverse is heavily worn out,with partially legible legend :CONSTANTINOPOLIS ; the portrait is helmeted,drapped and cuirassed personification of Constantinopolis holding scepter.

Reverse is winged Victory holding scepter and shield,foot on prow. The portrait of Victory is surprisingly good,consider its very small size.

mintmark is SMTS I guess, stands for Thessalonika.

This post is for my great friend,art historian and much talented artist Andibi,as part of our "share your collection" activity. I hope more friends and watchers will join this project and eventually build up an little virtual museum with dynamic,updating collections.
