A lot of Avatar fans have a rather intense dislike of Maiko...in fact, I don't think I've seen another couple take so much heat! So, using my patented Booter Logic, I decided to delve into the reasons WHY(constant face sucking aside). However, my logic must have had an off day, judging from the grade it got. :/But ya gotta admit, guys who act like Mai DO get a love of love. Which is maybe why MAO is a good idea...[link]
Now, before you jump down my throat with Reasons Why Booter Is Wrong And Ignorant For Making This, let me just nip that in the bud. I am not promoting ANY sort of shipping, and this thing is a SPOOF. So if you're actually looking for a well-researched and thought out debate starter, look somewhere else.

Snape has sarcastic wit, cold exterior, and a sour attitude but he is also passionate and very loyal.

In her defense, Azula was going to allow Mai's boyfriend to be BOILED TO DEATH. Loyalty can take a back seat in such circumstances. She is very loyal to Zuko, at least.
As much as I love her character...I agree that calling Mai passionate is pushing it.

Seriously, though. I imagine that Zuko's seriously disturbed emotional problems would get wearing after a while...
I also have a theory that runs on Discworld logic: Zuko and Mai are bad attutide incarnate. But forces so great must naturally exist in opposition to each other, and so crash together, cancelling themselves out and remaking them into a semblence of normalcy.
I suppose it makes sense, given that Zuko grew up with his life in the hands of two psychopaths, and Mai grew up in a miserably stilted home. Poor kids never had a chance to be sane.

I think what I hate most about Maiko is that the name is so close to Mako, Iroh's original voice actor. It often makes me confused cuz I miss the 'i' sometimes...grr....

Zutara is one of the only 2 ships I support. Even though I'm not very avid about supporting it...I just prefer that over the others.....yeah....just throwin that out there.

I don't know what's wrong with people, I like Mai. Maiko doesn't both me but, then again, I'm not really an Avatar shipper either. I laugh at it all. Now, get me to talk about a different fandom or two and it's a whole 'nother story.

It's the same with Akito (from Fruits Basket); when everybody thought she was a man, 'he' had a lot of fangirls. But when it was revealed that Akito's actually a 'she' -> the fangirls began to hate her.

Actually, I think it works. I imagined Mai as a guy (but not for the buttsechs...yeeck) and the character instantly became hot and likable. What is up with that?
Oh, yes, and brilliant deduction, by the way. Once you got it in my head, I realized I can apply this to many female characters (Rin, Machi, and Akito from Fruits Basket popped into at the mention of Hatori) and it makes me realize how shallow the most of the fangirls of the world are (me included). I'm sorry emo girls of the world, I'll try to love you more!

Maiko isn't my favorite ship, but I still like it because it's so funny and emo. I guess I'm one of the few female fans who doesn't like Snape. I did hate him a little less after book 7, but he still is one of my least favorite characters. I've never heard of the other guy you mentioned who gets fandom love, so I have no opinion on him.
I like both Mai and Zuko though.

It's a common trend within fandom. Female fans tend to adore even the most despicable male characters (i.e. Sylar ... case in point: I'm part of the Sarmy) but are incredibly rough on female characters, especially if they DARE to become romantically involved with a male character. Heaven forbid they date one, dump him, and date another male character! Then she's a slut! But a male character can date as many Small-Town-Girls as he pleases and still be a fan-favorite.
Sometimes it doesn't even have to do with 'interference' with slash pairings (though sometimes it does) but I find it difficult to like female characters in the TV shows that I watch. Maybe it's not the fault of the fans, but the creators? Heroes, for example, is notorious in fandom for poor female characterization. I can think of only a handfull of female characters I love as much as my plethora of favorite MALE characters.

Personally, I LIKED Mai. Liked her a lot. Sure, I'd have been a tad happier if Zuko kissed Katara, but the Zuko/Mai thing didn't INFURIATE me like other hookups in shows have.

Well, I don't like Mai with Zuko (or Mai in general, really), because, in my opinion... she looks like a man. 
In my opinion, Zuko could do much better; maybe be with a girl who is, I dunno... actually pretty? (no offense to the Mai-fans, BTW; like I said, this is just my opinion)
But yeah, in some ways... what you put in this actually makes sense, I think. lol Not in my case, though; to be honest, I'm not a fan of any yaoi/yuri, and I wouldn't want to see Zuko with another guy, by any means.
...But I still don't like him with Mai. lol

BenRG's Theory of Maiko Fandom Hate
It is my theory that fandom hatred of Maiko shipping is contextually sensitive. Allow me to explain: You will find that only certain types of fan hate Maiko. The first are those who fit this equation:
Maiko_hate = Zuko + (female =/= $Fan'sPreferredOther)
In other words, Maiko is loathed because it isn't Zutara, Zoph or whatever pushes out that particular fan's boat.
However, I find Maiko hate can also be caused by a relationship that can be expressed thus:
Maiko_hate = Zuko + (female =/= $thinlydisguisedself-insert + MarySuePowers) where $fan = female teen or tween fangirl.
In other words, quite often, Mai is a target of hate because the bitch stole Zuzu away from the fangirl in question.
Terrifying, isn't it?
For what it's worth, I'm okay with Maiko. Then again, I am so mixed up a shipper that I can handle Zutara, Kataang, Taang and a myriad other ships except yaoi. My guilty pleasure is Katophaang. There. That tells you all you need to know about me.

This is just me, but the problem I have with Maiko is the same as Zutara - the overly devoted fangirls. (I mean, do I rain on your parade by pointing out that the level of animosity is the same with Katara or Jet? No? Then leave me with my mansmex in peace!) There's really no hate for the character there at all, Mai's fine, and she has some great scenes too.
