Description
A lot of Avatar fans have a rather intense dislike of Maiko...in fact, I don't think I've seen another couple take so much heat! So, using my patented Booter Logic, I decided to delve into the reasons WHY(constant face sucking aside). However, my logic must have had an off day, judging from the grade it got. :/But ya gotta admit, guys who act like Mai DO get a love of love. Which is maybe why MAO is a good idea...[link]
Now, before you jump down my throat with Reasons Why Booter Is Wrong And Ignorant For Making This, let me just nip that in the bud. I am not promoting ANY sort of shipping, and this thing is a SPOOF. So if you're actually looking for a well-researched and thought out debate starter, look somewhere else.
Whew.

VERY late, but I never liked mai because she was underdeveloped, and that made her boring to me. She was as underdeveloped as cabbage man, in my opinion. Pairing a very developed character like Zuko with a character like Mai doesn't work because they don't compare well. It's like if Aang was paired with that undeveloped girl from that one episode with the fortune teller.

I think the sexism was just for the satire. I don't think they meant that people actually dislike Mai for being a girl. That's my opinion though.

To be honest she is the only female I dislike in the series. Even Azula who is a psycho sociopat is likable. Even if Mai was a guy I still won't ship her with Zuko. I rather ship him with Katara(I like Zutara-sue me).Β About Snape-well I never liked him. I prefer Voldemort as a villan somehow.Β

Both Hatori and Snape had a Freudian excuse, unlike Mai.Β Are you serious about people loving Snape? He is one of the most divisive characters out there...although he is well written, unlike Mai. Β Hatori has a gentle heart and cares about his family, unlike Mai. She is bored by everything and despises her younger brother (only for the comics to pull a retcon to manipulate readers into rooting for her).Β There's a reason why she's so bland and underdeveloped.Β Mai is only interestedΒ in Zuko and only exists to serve as his love interest.Β

I don't really think Mai is only interested in Zuko. The problem why she's underdeveloped is that most of the villain focus was on Azula.

I like Mai, I ship zutara. She's not one of my favourite characters, but I don't hate her. Maiko, however, is my Notp. I just didn't see any chemistry with them and felt that their personalities didn't go. They liked eachother as children, but everyone changes from when they were 8 years old. Mai crushed on a happy, unscarred Zuko who sat with his mother feeding turtle ducks. To me, it felt like Zuko was holding onto Mai because she was one of the only memories of his old life that was happy. Their first interaction as a couple, Zuko opened up to Mai and told her his worries about coming home to his abuser, and she yawned and said "I just asked if you were cold, I didn't want your whole life story." and kissed him. Yes, I know Mai can shut down BS from Zuko, but this wasn't BS, this was him opening up to her and telling her how he felt. Zuko broke up with Mai in a letter, the equivalent of over text, left her in prison and didn't show any signs of thinking about her again until the last few minutes of the finale when they miraculously get back together. Honestly, most of the zutarians hate maiko because of the reasons I just listed, and hate Mai because they feel she was cold and uncaring to Zuko. This is just my opinion, of course, not trying to offend anyone. I'm not try to convince you to ship zutara, so don't hate on my OTP.

I don't dislike Mai, nor do I particularly like her. She's cool, I guess, and I would have liked it, if she had gotten more screen time, so we could have gotten to know her better. I can't tell what goes on in her mind at all sometimes. My biggest peeve is her relationship to Zuko. It was done awkwardly. Suddenly they are kissing like long lost lovers and the only thing we get to transition this is a flashback to when they were kids. Which was three years ago and not even that serious, considering it was only a crush, and nothing ever came out of it. Zuko didn't even seem to see her that way. Also I'm pretty sure it was Zuko's first relationship (not sure about Mai), but the way they acted nobody would notice. They were cold and indifferent to each other in the beach scene (not that unusual for teenagers), until they finally admitted that they cared for each other. The problem is they never showed why they cared. They almost didn't interact as kids, didn't see each other forever and the next thing they show us is them kissing each other as if it was the most natural thing in the world. It doesn't even suit their personalities. Zuko for one seemed very awkward around girls in his first date back in the Earth Kingdom.Β

But don't cold attitude+sarcastic wit+cold exterior+girl also equal Toph? (At least in the beginning) Arguably the most popular Avatar character? The only reason Mai bugged me was that she didn't seem to have emotions, which is hard to relate to for me. (I don't like that archetype much in general.) What bugs me (but just a little) about Maiko is that they sometimes accentuate each other's flaws, instead of making each other better. I see what you mean about this, but at the same time, I want to point out some other things that could be involved in the Maiko hate dump.

Toph wasn't didn't have a cold, deadpan exterior or attitude at all, though. She was a rough-around-the-edges free spirit who goofed around with Aang and Sokka and even made frequent jokes about her own blindness.

Actually I don't hate Mai, but I don't think thatΒ diagram was right. I don't think that is a gender problem.Β
Hatori and Snape aren't the same. They actually are very different characters.Β Characters are more than just "sarcastic, cold, sour". In every character there are different shades and those made them like they are. Furthermore... Hatori, Snape, Zuko (and others)... they share a tragicΒ past where Mai don't...
π: 1 β©: 1
Piss-kun In reply to FrancescaROTG [2014-08-14 15:46:48 +0000 UTC]
So, a tragic past change everything? Or are you saying that a tragic past excuse every flaw in a character?
π: 0 β©: 1
FrancescaROTG In reply to Piss-kun [2014-08-20 23:15:13 +0000 UTC]
I'm just saying that people love tragic characters...
Cold exterior is most tasteful when it is dressed with a tragic past. Many people LOATHED Snape before of the last book, however.
Look Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica)... she has sour attitude, cold exterior... and she is a fan favourite...
And Ren (Elemental Gerad)?
And Daria Morgendorffer? (she not even has a tragic past, and she is popular enough)
And Katniss Everdeen? (in a way)
Actually in the fictional universe there are MANY female characters sarcastic and cold, and they aren't all hated.
If Mai isn't popular, then:
a) Actually isn't because her attitude, but 'cause Zutara
b) In her specific case, that combination didn't turn out to be charming for most of people
Deal with it. It happens...

Lol! I'm pretty "meh" about Maiko. I just finished watching the show (yes I'm super late lol), and I'm a bit sad my ship Zutara did not sail, though I pretty much knew it wouldn't, Β but Kataang is cute so I'm alright. Im just a show watcher so if there is a comic out there or something I have not read it yet and I do not know if they left things out but, although when we got the flashback of Mai when she had a clear crudh on Zuko and I found that cute, I was neverthless wary of the ship and disappointed (because zutara damnit) but mostly because zuko was my favoriteand I felt very protective of him. Because Mai was a friend of Azuul I worried she might betray him and hurt him further...but when she saved him from death, I decided that she was suitable for my Zuko. That being said, the ship is kinda cute, but I just feel meh about it because it just doesn't bring that jolt I crave in a pairing, Β it's just okay to me.Β

As an individual i love Mai, i think she's an awesome fighter and a cool person in general. I think one of the main reason i'm not a Maiko (I'm a Zutarian) is because i didn't really see the early stages of their relationship development, so i was not given the chance to warm up to the idea of Maiko but was instead abruptly shown that they're already in a relationship. i remembered being surprised when i found out Zuko was with Mai because i couldn't remember him ever mentioning Mai (but maybe i just missed it. i skipped some episodes)

This. I was really just thrust into it without any kind of build up that I saw, so I was just meh about it in the end. I think if I had seen more, I would have liked the ship more because Zuko is my bby and Mai is cool with me. Just wish I could have enjoyed development between them before getting that leap into romance.

So the problem(or at least part of it) is the suddenness of it? It seemed more of a really out-of-focus childhood friend route to me or a typical pair the spares(a trope mind you) scenario, with those two being the most compatible personalities Β or made any lick of sense, meh. Β

This is pretty funny. I will admit I'm anti-Maiko; other than slash I don't think there is another fictional couple that I absolutely hate. Maiko shippers please don't kill me!!
Before you grab your pitch forks let me say that I DO NOT hate Mai. Though she is whiney sometimes, she is awesome with her knife throwing skills, and she is cool. The main reason Maiko bugs me is because Mai and Zuko's personalties don't mesh well together. (What?!! They are both total emos they mesh perfectly!!! :mad
Yes I admit they are both emos but it's more than that. Zuko's three years of banishment changed him. He learned what it was like to be treated like a servant and have to work for a living. He learned how to stand for what is right even if no one else would follow. (though it took him a loooonnng time) Mai never learned any of that. Other than fighting for Azula she really didn't have to do much herself. She relied on lower class people to do things for her. And she was taught from an early age to behave and follow the crowd so she could have an easy life. (That's not entirely her fault but you know... habits) The fact is their beliefs and values about society became different, and people who have very different values can't have a very successful intimate relationship. I'm not saying they can't get along, but there will always be rift between them.

I don't dislike Mai, but I am an avid Zutarian. I'm not saying Mai is very despicable or anything, and I think people who hate Mai because she got together with Zuko is kinda shallow...but I have to admit that I dislike her with Zuko. They have nearly no chemistry and, while Zuko seems to have a childhood crush on her, I doubt their marriage would work out. On the other hand, Bryke are TROLLS. Very, VERY huge TROLLS.
