Description
Large project 2 of 3 that has been consuming my life.I'm a junior in college and I'm going to my first high school prom next friday. Anyway, I promised to make something to match Large Project 3 of 3 which I'm still making. (Now complete, see the chainmaille tie in the gallery)
The body is half persian 3-in-1 sheet 6 in machine cut 18swg 1/4" ID bright aluminum. The clasp is some cheapo nickel plate bar (All I could find on short notice) through a 16swg 5/16" ID bright aluminum ring. The central seam uses 3/4 Persian to connect the two opposing sheets and the side seams use 3 connections like this to manage the sudden severe bend. The bottom of the bag is sewn up with euro-type connections and the cover is made from strands of GSG stitched together with the same euro-type connections.
The crystals are swarovski sapphire 4 and 6mm bicones.
The handle is 4-sided spiral roundmail (regular roundmail is made from 6 rows of e4in1 and appears to have 3 sides. This is 8 rows and appears square) in 18swg 5/32" ID machine cut bright aluminum. It has a 1/8" brass rod inside it to keep it rigid. The handle maintains the shape of the bag.

Freakin' awesome, so delicately elegant, quiet and yet flambuoyant? Not sure I spelled that right...
Instant favorite... what would you charge a person who wanted to buy it?
It looks almost priceless...

Thank you
$275-$300 probably. I'd have to come up with ring counts and crunch numbers to see how long it took. It was a quite a while.

The original is not for sale at any rate and I'd be most displeased having to replicate it exactly, as it was made for a special someone.
Seeing as how you maille, I assume this is just curiosity, but for anyone else reading this...

Now that's an idea! I really love how simple this piece looks, but how absolutely complex it is. Those blue beads are so complimenting to the rest of it. Wonderful job. Excellent idea and execution!

Thank you very much! I couldn't really pick a good background to photograph on. Black makes the chainmaille shine but you can't see the beads so well (and my skills (or lack therof) with making the little loops to attach the beads become apparent). It was made to go with a blue dress just a tad lighter than the bead color and matched nicely.

In the very late 1800s and early 1900s, quite a few machine made chainmail purses were floating around. None were built like this though, especially since the weave didn't exist yet! Google turns up some nice stuff

wow! makes great sense, though... no one can cut your purse off and you could use it as a sort of weapon XD

And you wouldn't need to keep a brick in your purse, although it does add to the comic relief

YEAH! I FUCKING LOVE CHAIN MAIL! i can actually make it to, tho i use 14 g. steel... and clip each ring by hand... my hand gets tired fast... lol.

What exactly do you use to clip the rings? I use the "score and break" technique with 10" end nippers for stainless and galvanized steels. It gives a pretty nice closure but is harder to do on stainless.

on my stainless, i use simple wire clippers... and to close them i weld each and every one... i dont score them at all, i just make the coil and start clipping one by one, that how my hand has gotten so strong, i am working on a shirt of a 6:1 ratio link instead of a traditional 4:1 turtle link... the 6:1 ratio link is much stronger and more closed, it just takes about 33% more links than a normal turtle link shirt... and quite a bit more time...

I see the Dragonfly too. It was one of the first things to catch my eye!
Gorgeous work though. I've tried my share of chainmail and I know you need ALOT of patience... that I don't have! Keep up the good work!
