"Good news Colonel, we just found a cache of old Separatist blasters! Most of them are E-5s but they're in good shape." "E-5s? Well, given the choice between them and those E-11s, I'll take the E-5s any day. Just make sure we pass out as many insulated gloves as we can spare" - Two Rebel Officers stationed on Felucia circa 1 ABY.
A cheap and inexpensive blaster rifle, the E-5 was originally designed by BlasTech Industries but reverse engineered by Baktoid Armor Workshops for use with their B1 Battle Droids. The E-5 is often considered to be the precursor to the infamous E-11 Blaster Rifle used by the Empire. The Battle Droids of the Trade Federation carried these blasters and Baktoid Armor Workshops even included the E-5 as part of a package deal with their B1 Battle Droids, giving the blaster to all of the B1s as their standard armament. The E-5s would remain the B1 Battle Droid's primary armament throughout the Invasion of Naboo and the Clone Wars. After the Clone Wars, the E-5 became a regular sight on the black market as the Empire outlawed the weapon and the Rebellion would make use of the E-5s when other blasters weren't available. Afterwards, the E-5 largely fell out of favor as despite its low price, it was not a popular weapon. The E-5 would still beat out the E-11 in popularity but the rifle would largely become a collector's item and would often be hung on the walls of homes of those who fought against or even served the Separatists during the Clone Wars. The E-5 would reappear in 28 ABY being used by battle droids used by the Zann Consortium.
The E-5 was accurate and reliable but the two-handed rifle was designed without a grip under the barrel, forcing the users to grip the sides of the barrels where the heat sinks were located, thus exposing their fingers to major heat when vented. For the battle droids who predominantly used these rifles, this was no problem, but for organic wielders, the E-5 would burn the fingers of those who used them. BlasTech, in an effort to make some kind of financial gain for the stolen blaster design, developed an improved heat sink mod for the E-5 that improved the heat sinks, allowing them to vent the same mount of heat and give the user a better, safer, grip on the weapon. If the heat sinks weren't available, insulated gloves would often offset the blaster's heat sink problem. The blasters were also light enough for them to be used with one hand.
There were two variants of the E-5. The E-5C Heavy Blaster Rifle was a rapid fire repeater variant used during the Clone Wars and the E-5R which was a slightly stronger variant of the basic E-5 which had slightly more punch than the basic model but was used exclusively by the BX-Commando Droids.
