Description
I've decided to re-visit some of my deviantART Visual Suggestions. This suggestion was made so that deviants wouldn't forget to mention the resources they have used when submitting art. The last version was sloppy (it was my first suggestion of course
Thanks to ^Hanratty-Stock for my first DD back then!

Sounds interesting. But I don't suspect that it is going to keep people from forgetting to mention resources. I'd have to see how it works but it looks like to me it would be more cumbersome than what I do now. I generally do a notepad have a collection of resources, paste into my deviation. From the looks of it this system would have one at a time... Since I use upwards to 6-8 resources in a deviation... this seems very cumbersome... not even sure what a thumb code is... That and I format a specific structure to my resource acknowledgements... which is the user's icon - text link. I'd have to see an example of how this would actually display. As a software quality engineer I don't see this as it sits as a user friendly system quite yet
And it is going to be one rife for user error as well. You need to consider edit options for the individual resources for example... As I said interesting concept but not yet sold on the benefit yet
Thanks for sharing!

Just to add on to that comment, this would be a tremendous benefit for graphic designers like me and a few others.
That said, it'll be a reaaaally fun experience hunting down those entries who still credit the old way or not at all and patching them up accordingly.

Really interesting Idea. But it would be better if you could include multiple resources

Oh yay! This makes everything easier to let many other deviants know that this artist had help with resources and all.
with out the so much typing in artist comments and such

I'm sorry, but for my photomanipulations, this arrangement would be quite inconvenient for me to work with because:
1. I often have the need to enter multiple links for both the DeviantArt stock and for outside stock; your suggestion only allows for one entry for each type of stock.
2. Not only do I include thumbs for each DA Stock photo, I also include descriptive labels for how I used the stock in my picture (e.g., "horse in background," "rabbit under bridge," "bird brushes") as well as an avatar-link to the stock photographer's profile page (a rule some stock providers require). Your form includes only a very limited-size field to accommodate a single thumb link.
3. I believe there is a limit to the number of thumbs you can include in the deviation's description (at least there used to be). Assuming there is still a limitation, one would have to revert back to using full URL links when that number is exceeded -- your field indicates that usage for that field is for "thumbcodes" only.
4. Some artists like to display the stock thumbs in a horizontal row within the deviation's description page, rather than displaying them in a vertical format. Editing horizontally would be difficult in a tiny field where most of the text is hidden, and would require the person to use the right/left arrow keys to reach the editing point rather than just clicking in the section of the text where the edit is required.
6. I use three lines of text for EACH Wikipedia and Flickr link (First Line: Short description such as "foreground," "deer," tree," and the actual URL link; Second Line: Name of stock site, type of Creative Commons License, plus a link to the applicable CC license used; Third Line: Attribution to the Photographer's Name as required by the Creative Commons License. It would be difficult to enter all that information in the small space allotted, and even more difficult to edit the information there as needed.
7. I create a word processing "Documentation" File for each photomanipulation that I create, which contains a copy of my deviation, any descriptive text I want to submit with my deviation including all the stock photographers' required data, copies of each stock photo I use, and a copy of the stock provider's usage rules for their deviations. When all is completed, I do a single copy/paste of the descriptive text and links directly from that word processing document into the Description box for my deviation. This not only speeds up the time it takes for me to upload a picture to DA, it gives me a good visual opportunity to be sure that I haven't overlooked credits to any photos used, and it provides me with all the documentation I might need in the future should anyone question my use of any stock used in the picture. Having to copy/paste bits and pieces of that text into several individual field boxes would be very time-consuming and awkward indeed.
4. There aren't any fields available for indicating the use of one's own stock, for crediting a professional model or photographer, and/or for technical information such as artistic media used in the creation of the deviation (e.g., Adobe Photoshop CS6, Wacom Intuous 5 Tablet, GIMP, Corel Painter 12, etc.)

1. This is just a suggestion - and yes, the actual version would definitely allow you to add more than one stock as a resource. For some reason I forgot to add the option to add more resources.
3. The way I thought of it, the resources used won't be in the description, but underneath it in a separate box, so the thumbnail limitation is irrelevant.
4. The stock thumbs wouldn't be listed vertically.
8. Crediting a model/photographer and technical information can go in the artist's comments/description?
Thanks for the feedback. If this was implemented by deviantART, I'm sure they'd not use this exactly how it's shown. And they'd probably use a lot of extra suggestions such as on your comment!

I added my two cents to your suggested layout only because it was offered as a possibility in the latest HQ article for a future upgrade: [link]
I do understand the need to get stock users to add the appropriate credits to their artwork. Many don't do that, or they don't follow the stock provider's rules correctly for accreditation. I'm rather paranoid about meeting all the stock providers' rules when I enter my documentation, so I most likely include more details to meet all those rules than 95% of the rest of the stock users. Still, I feel better for having done so, and it's just easier for me to do so in one large box than multiple little ones. And my style just naturally works best in vertical format rather than horizontal.
The additional credits for photographers and models (that are required for some stock photos) need to accompany the stock photos they're related to, so adding them separately to the description box wouldn't work. The same thing goes for links to the Creative Commons Licenses.
I would much prefer to be an artist and create my own drawings or paintings, so I wouldn't be dependent on the use of other people's works; but unfortunately I'm not able to do that.
Anyway, it's good that you're looking for ways to improve the site!

This is absolutely wonderful! The only thing that I think this is missing is a button to add more resources, since I (and many other deviants, I'm sure) tend to use more than one resource in a piece.
I hope deviantART will implement this soon.

Ugh. Yes PLEASE. PLEASE.
I can't tell you how many times I've gotten into arguments with people who don't think they should credit the creators of stock or other resources because "they shouldn't have to reveal if they used resources" or they don't have to credit bases for one reason or another. This will make them at least stop and think first before posting.
Though, you might want to have something (like a little pop-up that shows up when you hover over a question mark near the check box) that would define what the official qualifications for a "resource" is so you don't get people saying they used a resource because they weren't sure if a base or whatever was considered a resource since they're in Customization and not Resources.

This looks like a great idea... I mentor a lot of new deviants and they often just don't realise they should credit the originals. Though as you suggested it it was just a text box... I think it would be more helpful if there was a box where they could paste links, and dA turns it into thumbs if it's a deviation link? So dA would display one box with thumbs and one box with the external links in some other layout
