Description
I decided to do something a little different for the final photo of my essay. Instead of showing a long term aging process I decided to highlight the short term life of a leaf. The leaf was sitting with many others on an old, rusty stairway, which served as a fitting background.I can't remember if it was my 55mm or 35mm lens I used on this. No added lens or macro or anything though...

It is pretty cool that just the center of the leaf seems to be in focus. .. and the rest kind of fades out. . but all the blur EVERYWHERE around seems like almsot TOO MUCH blur.. .especially the right end of the photo.

you may be right about that... it was more of an experimental shot that I ended up wanting to use for my essay. i shot with the lens turned backwards so the depth of field is EXTREMELY shallow. more playing around needs to be done....

no effect added.... just shot through the lens backwards...

That is very cool. I love the blur - it adds a lot of interest to the photo. The textures are fantastic and the b&w really highlights them. Great job!!

thanks, i did the strange focus by holding the lens backwards against the camera body. i would have liked a slightly deeper depth of field, but oh well. thanks for the comments.

I like your theme, first off. And I like the black and whites. I think the biggest things that I notice about this picture is the focus which doesn't seem quite right, and the very midtone based quality. I'm just saying that you have more strong midtones, and not enough strong quarter and three quarter tones. The photo just doesn't seem to have that contrast, which I think would have given this photo more punch, and taken away from the mixed up focus. It almost looks like the focus is more on the background (which is what happens when you take a macro shot without macro lens, or setting) and I find that oddly enough it makes the photo look stretched width wise.
So far, I think your Essay Photos are quite nice and you did a good job on them.

thanks for all your comments on my photos, red. on this one, i'm a bit confused though, both you and gutterpansy thought the focus was off, and yet, when i look at it i see the center of the leaf as being the most in focus part of the photo, right along the near vertical line that runs down the leaf. the focus is strange for the reason explained in my response to gutterpansy. i have to run now, but more later...

well, kind of. the depth of field was so shallow that focussing on the front of the leaf prevented almost all of the rest of it from being in focus. the reason is I used my 35mm or 55mm lens but held it backwards to the camera so that I was shooting through it the "wrong" way. thanks for the comments
