ALL MY FEELS ;~; I swear, Spike X Rarity is such a tragic yet romantic pairing... stuff like this reminds me of why that is.

Why did rarity turn to stone in the first, and that I hope it was her choose.
IΒ have a strong feeling that the reason was is so that they would be both a the point of death to die together.
To basically spare them both from ever feeling the loss of their true love.

Yes, they decided to use the statue spell near the end of Rarity's life, so that she could spend time with Spike at the end of his, and they could pass away together.
