Description VIGIL gazed at all the blinking lights. It gave her a headache. Staring at something like this for hours a day just couldn't be good for one's health ... or psyche. Even more worrisome was what they ment, though. Portals, seemingly phasing in and out of existence constantly, all over the map. It made no sense.
"You say this started with ... Aura?", she asked, absorbed in thought.
"Yeah! At least we think so!", Mac replied. "She was in the middle of a system check-up, when something interfered with her own portal generator. She got it under control quickly enough, but then ... this started to happen! It's like someone's hellbent to Bonnie-and-Clyde the Multiverse!"
"Bonnie and Clyde?!"
"Y'know? Perforate! Turn into Swiss cheese?"
Vigil just gave him a bland look.
"I know those were gangsters ... but that figure of speech still seems in poor taste, Mister Tarrett!"
Mac made a face and returned to the console. Vigil, however, piped up again.
"I beg your pardon? What do you mean, I put the fun in funeral? Could you be anymore irreverent?"
"And here I thought you didn't read thoughts uninvited!"
"I do not! But the way you thought this was like saying it loud enough for me to hear, pretending to whisper! You all but threw those thoughts at me!"
"Let's not fight! I will act my age!"
"You better!"
He looked at her, gaping at him, an offended expression on her face. Keeping secrets from Vigil could be as tricky as hiding snacks on your person from a cat. A new alarm blared, interrupting the tense scene. Mac immediately checked it and ...
"Christ on a bike!"
Another portal had opened. A big one! And where it led, he had no idea. The message "Origin Unknown" appeared on the console. Unclassified interdimensional holes in the sky were never a good thing. And this one already took effect. Vigil stepped closer, eying the giant red dot, blinking on the monitor.
"That somehow looks worse than all the others! What is it?"
"Just opened over Boston!", Mac explained. "Turned up the heat! Literally! The temperature near it has increased to 200 degrees ... and rising!"
"Have any of the other portals done that?"
"Not so far!"
Mac scratched his chin before switching consoles and opening communication.
"I have a couple of agents in the city! They are on vacation, but I think that's superfluous now! I'll put them on the case!"
"Good!", Vigil commented, "I trust your people will handle the matter discretely?"
Mac nodded.
"Don't worry, nobody wants a panic! Discretion is their middle name!"
