Description LOL. That nurse's incompetence destroyed at least one marriage and doomed the bio-Cake Twins to a miserable childhood.

Seriously, I can't be the only one who didn't buy the "pony genes are freakin' weird" explanation that the show gave us. But I also don't like the implication that Mrs Cake cheated on her husband because it feels out of character for her. So this "switched at birth" scenario is my new head-canon.

You know another good theory? Mr. Cake is shooting blanks so they used a sperm donor, Mr. Cake is too embarrassed to admit to it so he made up that crazy story.

That's actually ingenious. And it makes far more sense than the show's actual explanation.

Personally, I never liked the implication that Mrs Cake might have cheated on her husband. So that's why I made this switched-at-birth scenario

At first I thought the last panel was a flashback saying Mr and Mrs Cake were siblings, and that the babies looked exactly like their grandparents as a result.

Of course when I started thinking reasonably I wanted to shoot myself for going that route. XI

So your head canon is that they were switched at birth, but the nurse truly does believe that the wives were cheating? With that thought bubble in place, I figured that was point you were trying to make, and the switched color schemes were just a joke, to demonstrate that the coloring of Pound and Pumpkin are what's helping save the Cakes' marriage. I really like this, but your point wasn't able to get across to me. I only figured it out thanks to your comment, which doesn't count as part of the artwork.

Actually, the joke is that the nurse is just too stupid to realize the blatantly obvious fact that she mixed up the kids. And that the only reason the Cakes are still together is because Mr Cake was willfully deluding himself (unlike the other husband, who jumped to the more obvious conclusion).

I thought it came across in the artwork. But I appreciate the critique. Its always good to get another perspective.

why do the babies in the bottom panel look like mr. and mrs. cake as babies?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

brensey In reply to irken-ivader-zena [2012-06-28 21:55:06 +0000 UTC]

The joke is that the nurse switched the babies. So the couple on the bottom got the Cakes' biological children and vice versa.

And the husband on the bottom is mad because he assumes that his wife cheated and that's why his kids don't look like him or his wife.

While that theory of yours is possible, I know for a fact that babies and their parents get a tag on their wirsts to know who belongs with who. Switch-ups like these should be impossible.

Also, Genes act very strange, and most couples can get childeren without any traits of their parents. Add mutation and ponies to it, and we get an impossible amount of possibilities.

You don't have to believe it, but truth is stranger then fiction in biology.

brensey In reply to Unimportant21 [2012-06-22 22:15:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, ponies don't have wrists. So they can't use handy wrist bands to prevent switching. And switched-at-birth situations still happen in real life once in a blue moon despite modern advances and safeguards. So you can't really say it's "impossible" because basic human error is always a factor.

I know genetics can be weird; but I find it VERY hard to believe that a couple can have two children that look absolutely nothing like them (and are a different "race" to boot). So this theory is my head-canon because it makes the most sense to me (and I hate the idea that Mrs Cake had an affair).

I figured that at least Pound Cake was switched, since he didn't look anything like either of his "parents" and Mrs. Cakes ancestor who was a pegasus wasn't related to her by blood. At least Pumpkin has the same colors as Mr. Cake and his unicorn relative is a blood relative, and minus a few "Greats" also a direct relative. It doesn't help that there was a baby that looked like it had Mrs. Cakes colors in the Nursery.

That's a good theory, but their are some problems to it.

One being that we don't know if Mr. Cake was there for the birth. If he was there, he would have a least seen the babies being born. So he would see Pound Cake and know what he looks like.

Problem two is not everypony is going to look like their parents. I mean look at Twilight and Shining Armor. Those 2 barrel look like their parents and only have a few inherited traits.

So thats why it can't work.

Uh, I think my theory is VERY plausible because we don't know who was there for the birth and we also don't know if the hospital staff is even competent enough to safeguard against a switch during a busy day.

Also, while there are a few characters in the show who don't look like their parents, most of the families we've seen at least bear a passing resemblance and/or share the same "race". So saying my theory cannot work is just silly. I think my theory makes WAY more sense than "both kids just happened to take after extremely distant relatives".

First I was mostly talking to Silverviper about this, not you. This is just odd that you comment on this.

Also I don't think any of the Nurses or Doctors would forget the earth pony who gave birth to a Pegasus and a unicorn.

Now yes we have not seen to many families with mixed races. That I well give you, but I'm not giving you the traits part. There are still a lot of other charters that don't look like their parents. Not just Twilight, but Pinkie Pie also does not look like her parents. Same can be said for Rarity.

Also I don't want this to be a big deal. You have your idea and I have mine. So that is all I have to say.

That sounds like the plot to an old movie called "Start the Revolution Without Me" (two sets of identical twins are mixed up at birth and grow up believing they're fraternal twins). That's an interesting theory, too.

Honestly, if you look at the babies in the nursery at the beginning of Baby Cakes, you can think of a lot of theories.

Depending on how alicorn genetics work, I guess.
