UPDATE (March 30, 2015): Changed "mean" to "means".

Simply put, any definition that serves as a foundation or cornerstone to a movement or ideological belief is completely irrelevant when actions are made in the name of them aren't followed.

"Oh but , by definition, is all about . You just don't understand it." This is a common argument used by people within a particular movement that try to either excuseΒ and justify their actions, or try and debate someone who doesn't want to identify with them.

Sorry, but definitions do not outweigh actions. And when your actions don't resemble what the movement was built upon, the whole foundation will just crash and burn.

It was a statue made of hay at an event called "Burning Man Festival". It was quite cool.

That's not true at all: say, if you're for nonviolence; but you lose your temper when someone calls you a name or something...does that make your pacificism non existent or null en void? Of course not. It means you failed yourself, by your own definition.Β

Β The secret to debating someone isn't to hold them to your standards it's to hold them to their's; because if you can trap them using their own logic and reason, you've nailed them in a coffin.Β

brentcherry In reply to The-Psychonaut [2015-03-30 05:14:39 +0000 UTC]

It entirely depends on the views of the ideology or movement. If yourΒ causeΒ opposes violence, butΒ sometimes deem itΒ necessary to end such, then you're still within your beliefs. However, if you are against violence in every form or reason AND THEN commit violence, then yes, you have failed yourself as well as the cause you claim to fight for.

That's exactly what this quote is doing. It's saying that if you advocate for a movement or ideology with specific sets of standards, then you'd better abide them, or else your entire cause means nothing. So I don't know what you're talking about.

Sounds like a wordier version of "actions speak louder than words."

Yes, but it addresses the impact the words have.
