Description
I have always wanted to assign myself a book project with a raven character. These birds are already such characters. The trick has been to find some balance between their rugged, ruffled, "ghastly grim" appearance and that bright-eyed intelligence that makes them endearing. I entertain some hope that I'm beginning to strike a balance between "rugged" and "cute" with this guy.No, this is not Cory (a previous character who remains my personal mascot). Cory is rendered realistically: here, the challenge is to figure out how much of my usual realism I can put into this guy without losing his innocent appearance. Still working on some consistency issues too (feet).

Lovely Raven! You made him wonderfully expressive.
Have you ever read Lilith by George MacDonald? It's a Victorian fairy tale by an author who greatly influenced J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The fairy tale has a character who appears to be a raven in some settings or a human in others, depending on where you see him. This made me think of him.

I think you did a wonderful job balancing rugged and cute! He has a sweet, intelligent face, while his coloring and ruffled feathers suggest more of the grim and rugged appearance.

Thank you! That one portrait on this sheet was the face that really clicked in my sketchbook. Oddly enough that was the one where I pushed the "velociraptor" silhouette. XD

Haha, well, velociraptor are rather bird-like.
