I do kinda want to hear this theory, otherwise did you come up with calling the planet Equus cause I really like that. I decided to make Vinyl Jewish as a tribute to one of my favourite musical acts. My favourite band is Ninja Sex Party, I created a piece of fan art recasting them as Ninja Sex Pony and used vectors of a rule63 Vinyl and Octavia to do so because there persona's remind me of the members of NSP. The band's frontman Danny Sexbang is Jewish and this just had a knock on effect on my headcanon.

Or it could just be that Vinyl's family believes the planet revolves around the sun and not by the will of a tall horse.

No, I didn't come up with that. It's how the fandom calls the planet Equestria is located on, though, I don't know when and how it originated and who came up with this name. And neither remember where I've heard it for the first time, which sucks.....

For the theory, it's that Equestria's planet was Earth once. Humanity got extinct or wiped out eventually and evolution began anew, creating ponies as one of the master species of the planet (and griffons, zebras, dragons, hippogriffs, ect.). Remains of humanity still exist and can be found occasionally, indicating that "intelligent" life has been there before, in the form of humans.

For jewish ponies, it could be that the switch from humans to ponies wasn't a hard one and that there has been a period where the last remaining humans and the first early ponies lived together. Some of these last humans told the ponies what Jewish is and some of the ponies adapted it for them as religion, which remains until today. Basically, humans having passed it on to ponykind in ancient times.

Another possibility would be that old texts from humanity survived and pony archeologists dug them up eventually, finding out about old aspects of human culture, such as various religions, after which some ponies got interested and decided to adopt them.

That Equestria's planet was Earth once is backed up by the show itself (as it's to expect, since it's a theory), by something that was seen in Season 2:

Of course, the part about Jewish that I added to the theory only works if such a thing as a religion even exists in Equestria, which is something that we still don't know yet.

Well at least she had the decency to learn an actual ceremonial Hanukkah song rather than the cliched dreidel song as Vinyl pointed out.
