Description
I have always been a huge, huge fan of John Carpenter's movie "The Fog" (1979). It's not a movie that people bring up very often when talking about Carpenter films but it was always one of my favorites of his. It's sort of a forgotten classic in a lot of ways....And before anybody asks, no, I haven't seen the remake that came out a few years ago and don't have any opinion on it!

I'm a big fan of this movie. I do slightly prefer the first half or so, when it's more a ghost movie than a 'zombie slasher' film as one friend described it. But it's a great piece of work all the way through.

Great work!!
I too love The Fog - I've seen it two or three times on the big screen in London & countless times on DVD!
I found your work whilst googling "john carpenter's the fog ec comics" as they were one of his many formative influences.
I enjoy reading Lovecraft & also M.R. James, the late 19th/early 20th century British ghost story writer.
Please browse my own DA gallery when you can!
Cheers,
JohnΒ

I'm a huge fan of The Fog, too.
For me it's the best ghost story, a classic, and I love the scene, where Father Malone meets Blake.
You did a great tribute to a great movie.
And btw: I saw the remake and it was more than disappointing.

Like you, I'm a huge fan of The Fog.Β I think it and Ghost Story are the best ghost stories that I have seen on film.Β I really like your work.Β This is a great nod to a classic.
Oh, save your time, I saw the remake and it doesn't compare to the original.

I watched this so long ago I can't remember except the last part, where they do kill the cross-hugging priest.
the body counts were not high as I thought they were going to be.

I love that movie! Even if it oddly seems to go from a very well done and bizarre ghost story to a zombie slasher flick about halfway through.

Heh, remember back in the old Universal monster movies, there was fog in nearly every single movie. It's a certain element that modern horror films rarely use.

Well as times change, you tend to notice certain things.
PS: Heh Heh, you know one time I made a horror film joke. One night after driving home with my old friend after hanging out with some of our other friends, we noticed a strange object hovering in the sky. (it was a cloud, but a strange lookin one) After my friend joked about it, I said this: "Ahhhh great, were driving in the middle of the night, all alone, there's a pale full moon in the near cloudless sky, and you've just made fun of a strange, dark anomaly floating in the sky.......you've offically put us in a horror flick, thanks man! Ha Ha Ha!

Yeah, and although I am a sane sensible person, deep inside me I do wish, at times, that something strange, weird, or supernatural would happen in the world. Yeah, I know all those cryptid hunters and ghost hunters out there are bogus, but sometimes, I really do dream.

Carpenter is one of my favorite directors, and this movie shows why. he can do so much while working with so very little, as this movie clearly had barely anything to work with budget wise, but he still made a well done, interesting, and very creepy film. this does not go up there with Escape from New York(one of my favorite movies), Halloween, or the Thing, but it still really good. and my god, the music. don't get me started on the remake, one of the most unspired bores in the horror genre (which sadly says alot today).

I agree on all points. Yes the music in the original FOG is amazing. Certainly one of my favorite horror movie soundtracks.

truly. so very simple yet so very effective. he does that alot, doesn't he. i mean, Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, i've just scratched the surface on all the low budget masterpeices he has done. all of which have or will be remade. damnit. you should do more Carpenter, i would enjoy seeing your take on Christine or Prince of Darkness, both of which i imagine it would be difficult to make. one is about a car, the other a vat of green liquid. i couldn't make that scary if i tried. maybe Village of the Damned, but then that movie was kind of meh. i still imagine you could do some good art with it, though. sorry this was so long, Carpenter gets me talking.

BryanBaugh In reply to Capstain259 [2011-05-06 18:21:46 +0000 UTC]
I have often thought about doing a drawing of "Christine". The movie is nowhere near as great as the book but it is still a great movie. Just sort of a simplified, bare bones version of the novel. So I still like it a lot, and have often wanted to draw it. My problem is I have no talent for drawing cars. I am just miserably bad at drawing cars. I would hate to do that great film/ book/ and character such an injustice. But the desire is there. Maybe someday.
I never cared for "Prince of Darkness" at all.
In my mind there is early Carpenter and late Carpenter. All his early stuff is wonderful. His later stuff is very lacking in my opinion. "Prince of Darkness", "They Live"... that era of late 80's Carpenter films is the dividing line for me.

Capstain259 In reply to BryanBaugh [2011-05-06 19:10:59 +0000 UTC]
i freely admit that Prince of Darkess, In the Mouth of Madness, They Live, and all the rest from that time are certaily nowhere near as good as the early stuff, to me they are just well made fun, as opposed to the 70's and 80's Carpenter which where so much more than that. i think that Big Trouble in Little China was the dividing point (whether it was the last good one or the first bad one is up to you, i personally love it). i still think that most of them have that unique Carpenter feel to them, and thats usually good enough for me. usually.

BryanBaugh In reply to Capstain259 [2011-05-06 21:00:32 +0000 UTC]
I'd say Big Trouble in Little China was the last great Carpenter film. Personally I think the big "dividing line" of Carpenter's filmography was when he lost Dean Cundey, his director of photography during the early half of his career. In my opinion Cundey was hugely responsible for creating that beautiful "look" that the early Carpenter films have: the heavy dark shadows, the rich deep-chroma colors, the drifting smoke, the naturally-occurring (but never over-used) lens-flares. All the films Carpenter made after Dean Cundey left, have a very generic look to them with flat lighting. I see a big difference there.

i want to slap myself for not thinking of that. that was certainly a loss, wasn't it. i don't think his later movies became generic per say, i think they still had a look of their own, just nowhere near as inspired as the old.
