Description
I have always been a huge, huge fan of John Carpenter's movie "The Fog" (1979). It's not a movie that people bring up very often when talking about Carpenter films but it was always one of my favorites of his. It's sort of a forgotten classic in a lot of ways....And before anybody asks, no, I haven't seen the remake that came out a few years ago and don't have any opinion on it!

I'm right there with you. I would add Escape From New York and Christine to that list. Even though the movie of Christine is a far cry from the book, it is still great and captures the spirit of the book, just on a smaller scale.

Escape is another underrated classic, I agree. I used to loop that movie on VHS back in the day. Didn't care much for the sequel.
King's film adaptions are almost always a far cry from the books. In an age of remakes, I am surprised no one is biting on any of those subjects.

All your work that you share here is just outstanding!! Each one captures just the right feel of the particular movie or character!!
I too am a great fan of this version of "The Fog". It just really works for me, and actually is creepier than a lot of horror movies out there, simply because it plays more to the psycology of fear than to the physicalness of it, though that's there too. It certainly is a classic for sure, and you've really nailed it with this piece!

Oh not prob, belive it or not... when I dropped that comment, my family was watching the movie. They didn't dig it that much, but still, it's perhaps my favorite Carpenter movie.

Eyes like those on the middle creature always terrify me.
Would you recommend this movie for me? It looks pretty scary, good scary.

Of course I would recommend it to anybody, cause it's a great movie. But speaking to you in particular, if you say that you fear dark figures with glowing red eyes... Then the last 10 minutes of John Carpenter's "The Fog" will scare the hell out of you.

This movie has always creeped the HELL out of me...mostly because of Carpenter's theme of the film. And I was there where they filmed it.
Setting that aside, I think you did a fantastic job representing a pivotal scene in the movie, and as one person mentioned above, it looks as if Blake and his men are lusting of the gold of the cross.
The illustration is well done and has an eerie feel, just as the movie itself does.
Awesome job.

Great pic, really understated in a cool, creepy way. It captures the seminal moment in the movie too. I like how you focus on the shininess of the gold while leaving the lead ghost/zombie's face in shadow with just his eyes glowing, fixed on the treasure that should have been his one hundred years ago.

Okay, like a total idiot, I have to correct myself here - I've only seen "The Fog" for the first time, fairly recently. And although I enjoyed it, like any blasted film I watch the first time, I get a lot more detail on the second viewing; I completely missed the point about them being leopards who had a right to their revenge.
Though I still like the Father Maloney character, as he still faced up to the wrongs his ancestors committed (though still reluctantly), BUT I should have hold off on the enthusiastic 'fan-boy' response.
I do own, and often watch "Lifeforce", and will give a way more informed comment on that piece of yours soon.

Even knowing the film's story takes place in the late 70s / early 80s, this great fan piece gives it a turn-of-the-century feel, as if Lovecraft, Poe, or William Hope Hodgeson originally came up with the script (not to take anything away from John Carpenter of course).

BryanBaugh In reply to Enshohma [2009-05-19 22:52:12 +0000 UTC]
I take that as a compliment! Actually, Carpenter has said that his story was inspired by writers like Lovecraft and M.R. James.

Enshohma In reply to BryanBaugh [2009-05-19 23:28:14 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I'm more then aware with Carpenter's love of Lovecraft (pun not intended), especially considering his fantastic homage to the author "In The Mouth of Madness". But was unaware of the additional M.R. James connection, which makes a lot of sense, considering the films' vengeful pirate ghosts. And not in the stereotypic manner of past films either; presenting them as horrid, worm-ridden things, demonically obscured by the darkness, even when they're out in open light.
Most of my friends just label them as 'zombie pirates', but that seems like undermining / dismissing the characters, and Carpenter's intent.
Also, a lot of horror fans I know get upset with me on this next point, but I actually liked the Father Malone character, and I love how this illustration of yours portrays him, as the fearful and wary protagonist who still is brave enough to face the otherworldly forces. Again, much like something out of Carpenter's influences.
Thanks so much for the reply man!

JC himself and watching mint ( or close to it) screenings.
Also its totally killer that your wife is into all that stuff too!
My wife loves the genre as well, in fact we both got married in full costume, on Halloween, in New Orleans and in a haunted bed and breakfast - it was great, full costume was required dress!

Well, my wife is not a horror fan in that sense, but I can say, with some pride that there is a decent-sized list of monster movies that she is now a fan of, that she never would have seen if she hadn't married me! Haha. When we first met she was scared to watch horror movies but I made her watch them with me and she was surprised that she started to find a few favorites. She has certainly lost that initial fear and grown to appreciate them more and more over the years. Plus she's one of those wives who gets interested in stuff just because I'm interested in it. And that goes both ways. I got her into horror movies and she got me into Asian food and fine wines. Haha.

Thats the key to the real deal, man.
If your into your mate you can easily like what they like.
Im a lucky guy; we met eachother through gaming and the shared interests have never really stopped.
And the ones we dont share are still fun and funny to enjoy - all kinds of name calling and fun-hearted harrassment ensues!
Like I said im lucky - she isnt a typical woman by any stretch at all and your wifey sounds very similiar.
Your buddy dave seems to have a really fun wife as well - I watched a movie on his gallery that his wife did the voice acting for and it was hysterical!
