Description
My tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made, John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".This is easily Carpenter's best film. All the elements - the writing, direction, acting, special effects, and music work together perfectly. It's got the fear of isolation AND paranoia, and some of the most brilliantly insane horror sequences ever put on film - thanks to Rob Bottin who, like Carpenter, was also doing the best work of his whloe career here. A perfect movie by any standard.

Of course. I was at "Grindhouse" on opening night! Saw it in a great theater, too, where they had the sound cranked up high. The sound of that car was vibrating the floor and just about blowing out my eardrums! And speaking of great Kurt movies, he was awesome in "Tombstone", also.

I had almost forgotten about Tombstone! I was there on opening night for grindhouse too. One of the few, actually. I'm pissed so many people missed the theater experience. I went with my parents! I know, weird, right. But they like that kind of shit, so we had a great time.

I didn't like that movie, it was slow without being suspensful, the animatronics gave more convincing performance than the actors...
Nice pic, though.
I agree with your disagreement! lol
I like the picture, especially Palmer and his venus head trap!
"The Thing" is a top 5 all time horror movie (maybe even number one). As to the remake, I figure it can't hurt anything. I recently read "Who Goes There?" and really it is great for a short story but the changes Carpenter made never hurt the story, also the it is vague at points and leaves room for artistic license.
I was so impressed with the short that I'm getting ready to do a "Who Goes There?" fan comic but the only changes I'm planning for it are to beef up the actual violence of the encounters with the Thing (like I'll show more detail than is described or in some spots insert a violent discovery that was only implied).
In the short story it's more about the tension aspect than the visual horror of the situation, I grew up on the '82 version so the horror/visual, for me, will always be an integral part of the story.

Gotta love Garry's shining moment in the movie.

You've already heard this plenty but this is spectacular!!! A very influential movie in my own work as well.
Definitely Kurt Russell's and Carpenter's masterwork.
If only a sequel had happened instead of Escape From L.A.

I love this movie by the way and you did an awesome poster.

If I ever get around to doing another illustration of "The Thing" I would certainly include the Blair Monster. But that might not be for a long time, I have a long list of other illustrations that I either plan to start, or which are already in progress, that I need to finish first! But thanks for your kind words on this.

That's for damn sure. And unfortunately, even when somebody does a really good one these days that is similar in tone and style to "the way they used to make em", it seems like there is always, still, some crucial element missing.

DRJS6 In reply to BryanBaugh [2007-11-18 23:33:40 +0000 UTC]
I know, newer films are just missing something, I can't put my finger on it, but they just don't have it. Its something with the atmosphere or the vibe of the films, but they don't stick with you the same way the Thing or say Alien did.
Hell, I still enjoy old classics or B-movies, which is why I'm a big fan of your artwork.

Ya know there is word of yet another re-make, possible sequal. Imagine the Thing takes over an American sub headed for Camp Pendalton in San Diego.
If they do it, they better not fuck it up.

Awesome fanart for a awesome movie! Just curious, have you read the book it's based on, 'Who goes there?" And, also, have you checked out the game they made as a sequel to the movie?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BryanBaugh In reply to Scarecrow-Jack [2007-09-02 21:30:07 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Actually the "book" the movie was based on is more of a "short story" than a book. I read it years ago when I was in college, but to be honest I barely remember it. I remember thinking you could see, from reading that story, where a lot of the basic ideas for the film adaptations came from, but it wasn't as successful or memorable as either one. That said, I have watched the 1950's version of The Thing many times, which was also inspirational to the 1982 version, and it's loads of fun.
As for the video game funny you should ask. My wife just bought it for me as a birthday present, but I haven't played it yet. She bought me a stack of games for my birthday and I was saving that one for last, since it looked the most interesting of the bunch.

Ah. Well, trust me, the video game, while the graphics are a bit dated, is a very good game, creates a good sense of paranoia.
