Description My tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made, John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".

This is easily Carpenter's best film. All the elements - the writing, direction, acting, special effects, and music work together perfectly. It's got the fear of isolation AND paranoia, and some of the most brilliantly insane horror sequences ever put on film - thanks to Rob Bottin who, like Carpenter, was also doing the best work of his whloe career here. A perfect movie by any standard.

Eh, I still think the greatest horror film ever made is 'The Wolf Man'. Still, a tremendously terror-riffic pic, Bogeyman Bryan!

Shriek ya later!

I think The Wolf Man is ONE OF the greatest horror films ever made also. But I think The Thing belongs high up on that list, too. I have many favorites.

Hah! Wilford Brimley For the Win!

I like the warm/cool interplay in here. I'd like to see some of it toned down a little, so the chromatic bits really scream. But that's splitting hairs.

Nice Kurt Russell likeness as well

Hey Andy! Thanks for the cool comments. Yeah, I was starting out with the colors all diffused and subtle, and then I started thinking about Carpenter's style on his early films, especially The Thing, where you have a lot of heavy black shadows and when there's color it's pretty intense and chromatic... those blue lights and glowing pink flares, hot orange flames, and Rob Bottin's amazing blackish-red blood...

dopepope In reply to ??? [2007-07-12 18:52:27 +0000 UTC]

The movie is by far one of my all time Fav's. And you don't get to see artwork about the characters much, so I fav'd yours. Great job. As much as I love Rob Bottin's creature designs in the movie, I always felt the creature that attacks during the blood test was the least inspired. The others were just soooo bizarre and that one just didn't seem as interesting. I love the movie regardless. It's quite amamzing just how well it still holds up to this day even with FX the way they look now.

I gotta disagree with you on one thing... I LOVE that monster from the blood test sequence. I think it's one of the films craziest, most chaotic, and horrifying moments!

dopepope In reply to BryanBaugh [2007-07-13 16:18:15 +0000 UTC]

Definitley a great scene no doubt, just the creature for it was a bit underdeveloped or under utilized for me.
Did you ever ponder the posibility of the creature in the wooden crate in 'Creepshow 1' to be related to the creature of 'The Thing'? They films came out in '82, the wooden crate has written on it 'Arctic Expedition' and 'Julia Carpenter'. It's probably just a little bit of an homage to the director, if anything, as they are pals I guess, but it's just fun to think about.

Haha, the funny thing is, you've been suggesting I do a tribute to this movie for a while, and I literally had this one lying around half-finished for about the past 4 months, and just kept getting sidetracked from it because of other things! But whenever you would suggest it I never wanted to say, "It's in the works!!" Because I wasn't sure when I would get to finish it. And, I would rather surprise people than keep them asking, "Anytime soon???" forever. Haha. Glad it turned out to your liking!

faile35 In reply to BryanBaugh [2007-08-04 02:28:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, it did turn out to my liking. I find it interesting how much of the film takes place in utter darkness, considering it's in Antarctica, and I love how your drawing reflects that. This just popped up in my Random Favorites and drew my attention again. Love this one.

BryanBaugh In reply to faile35 [2007-08-06 05:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you once again!! haha. When I first started coloring it I had no idea I was going to use black all the way around like that. I originally went into it thinking I would try to use the colors to suggest the winter ice lit orange by all the flares and fire they were constantly using in the movie. But then that seemed too pale and lacking. So I went dark and it suddenly felt like the movie to me.

PS2: Would love to see you do Big Trouble in Little China or Escape From NY/LA.

Yep, I did! Haha. And yes, the effects definitely hold up to modern standards, and are actually better than a lot of today's CGI monsters. Rob Bottin was a genius.
