Description My tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made, John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".

This is easily Carpenter's best film. All the elements - the writing, direction, acting, special effects, and music work together perfectly. It's got the fear of isolation AND paranoia, and some of the most brilliantly insane horror sequences ever put on film - thanks to Rob Bottin who, like Carpenter, was also doing the best work of his whloe career here. A perfect movie by any standard.

Bloody fantastic picture! I love this movie so much. It's one of the last great non-cg special FX masterpieces.

Right on! One of the greatest, and definitely one of my favorites. I can almost quote this film back verbatim. It's one of those films that just never gets old. Fantastic piece of art. Wilford Brimley as Blair is my favorite likeness, although the monsters are great, too.

John Carpenter was genius for making this film and your genius for making this awesome pic.

Oh, now stop that! Haha. Seriously, Carpenter was truly a genius when he was on that kick in the early part of his career... He just got into a groove where he turned out one classic after another: Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing... He was on a roll.

Indeed he was and well then he just fell off like alot of other great horror and suspense directors from that time.. Now it seems like were just stuck with awful remakes...*sigh*.... Well at least folks like you and I can help preserve those memories with wonderful illustrations..

Cool. Your movie tributes are gradually becoming more abstract and movie poster-like. The dog and the dude with the long neck who's name i've forgotten work especially well with your style. (the other likenesses are good too)

nice i like it!! even though i'm a bigger fan of the 50's original the john carpenter remake was pretty bad ass. the game's awesome too lol. but totally kick ass job.

Thanks! I like the 50's original a lot, too. But in my opinion this is one of those very rare examples of a remake that actually manages to surpass the original.

GREAT job Bryan!!!
This film was so over the top when it came out.... made me wonder could it ever be outdone?!
I don't think it has.

That part where MacReady put the hot wire into that little dish of blood made me jump harder than any other flick EVER!

Guyverman In reply to aquilianranger [2007-11-21 05:55:35 +0000 UTC]

The reason for this movie being so underrated is that film critics felt it was not faithful enoght to the 1951 film.

Little did they know that The story itself is in fact based off of a 1938 short story known as "Who Goes There?". The 1982 version's more faithful th the original story.

aquilianranger In reply to Guyverman [2007-11-22 04:50:04 +0000 UTC]

Correct on both accounts, although my "The Thing" is not a literal thing from "The Thing" just a thing.

Of course I am a big fan of both things.

I was wondering if you're going to do The Thing one of this days.

You really capture the monsters well, i always like when no one knows who's the real thing and can't trust anyone.

Have you ever played the game? If it was a real movie it goes well for a sequel.

The game was massively flawed btw. Great storyline from what I could manage to sit through without wanting to toss my controller in the trash--from shock and/or annoyance that is. You should give it a shot though, it takes place 20 years after the movie (or so) and the gov't discovers McReady's (that was his name wasn't it??) tapes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BryanBaugh In reply to sanges99 [2007-07-15 06:26:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, at least if it takes place 20 yrs after the movie, it doesn't tread on the film's dignitiy too much...

that movie rocked and what really made it an awesome movie was not necessarily the creatures but the paranoia that struck the entire crew as they were ready to shoot one another thinking who could be the alien.did you hear their making a remake of this movie should be interesting with new CGI altho i doubt it will be good without kurt russell.really nailed each horrific moment in the movie -total kudos

Nice pic, though.

Well, IIRC, there's this bit in the movie where the medic tries to save the life of one of the guys who have a gaping chest wound. Turns out to be the creature and that the "chest" was actually a mouth. Totally "disarmed" him there. Hehehe...little joke there..

No that's not the scene depicted in the upper left corner. You are forgetting the horrorific situation that arises during the blood test sequence.
