Description
My tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made, John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".This is easily Carpenter's best film. All the elements - the writing, direction, acting, special effects, and music work together perfectly. It's got the fear of isolation AND paranoia, and some of the most brilliantly insane horror sequences ever put on film - thanks to Rob Bottin who, like Carpenter, was also doing the best work of his whloe career here. A perfect movie by any standard.

i have just seen the prequel. my response...meh.
don't get me wrong, it did good things, clever things even, none of which i will spoil for you, and the actors do well with what they are given. the direction was competant, and the sets looked great. however, the characters are flat and forgetable, too much is ripped from the original, and it has one of the most glaring inconsistancies with the original i have ever seen in a prequel. again, i will not spoil it for you, but trust me, it is too glaring to be missed. even so, it wasn't bad per say, at least in my opinion. i look forward to hering your thoughts on it, and i will probably give more in depth thoughts then.

You may be waiting a long time to hear my thoughts on it. After viewing the trailer I feel no great urgency to rush out and see it... My reaction to the trailer was: Okay, every rumor I've heard about this movie is that it's a prequel to the Carpenter film. Which I was interested in, because I've been wondering about "the Norwegian Team" ever since I was 10 years old and a prequel would explain that, and thus expand on the original film's story... or at least, according to all the rumors I'd heard/ read. But there was nothing in the trailer to indicate that this was a prequel... In fact the trailer just looked like an exact copy or straightforward remake, with the exact same style of lighting, exact same musical score and... a chick playing Kurt Russel???
Well, I dunno, maybe it's cool. Probably I should still see it... But I think my interest, which was already guarded to begin with, fizzled out a lot after seeing that trailer.
To be clear - the trailer did not suggest a BAD movie, or a blasphemous spit-in-the-face to the previous version (as the Fright Night remake trailer did)... but just an underwhelming re-creation.
Bottom line, unless one of my more optimistic friends DRAGS me to the theater, I will either wait for the home video release... or just let this one slip past me altogether. I don't feel like I NEED the experience of seeing the 2011 remake of The Thing, especially not when I've got a pristine Blu Ray of the classic 1982 Carpenter version sitting right there on my shelf.
I never realized it till now... But I think I am all worn out from Remake - Fatigue.

yeah, you are probably best off just renting it when it is released. i do suggest seeing it at some point, though, at least as a curiosity, as despite this movie having alot of uninspired moments, to its credit the moments that work do work pretty well, and the ending actually does a great job setting up the original. i sort of doubt you will see it again after the first veiwing, but i don't see it pissing you off in any way. that's my two cents, do what you will with it.
i am actually long since sick of remakes, but i just keep seeing them in hopes that someday people will learn how to do it right. also, don't mention the fright night remake.

How was it inconsistent with the original? I thought it synched perfectly during the after credits video.

the spaceship. the first movie clearly establishes that the norweigans accidently blew it up trying to get it out of the ice, thus uncovering the thing, but in the this movie the spaceship is intact by the end. i am kind of confused as to how everything else was was synched so well, but they managed to miss that.

Yeah you are right I forgot about that part. Can only make speculations as to how to explain that. Well other than that they managed to synch the entire base to the look of the norwegian camp in the original. The two faced corpse outside, the man with the slit throat and wrists inside with the blood literally as frozen as it ran out, and then the dog running toward the original base with Lars in the chopper in pursuit.

Capstain259 In reply to Dachande89 [2011-10-16 16:58:50 +0000 UTC]
actually, i thought the handling of the two faced corpse was just a tad clumsy. i mean, it started absorbing a guy but just never finished? don't get me wrong, it was probably the most spectacular sequence in the movie, mostly because it was the only transformation that didn't involve tentacles and teeth, but still it struck me as a poorly thought out explanation. also, it would have been nice to actually see the guy with the slit wrists panic and kill himself, but i suspect they filmed that and it was cut, as this movie reeks of studio interferance.don't get me wrong, i liked this movie, and these are mostly nitpicks, but still there they are.

Dachande89 In reply to Capstain259 [2011-10-16 18:05:36 +0000 UTC]
Well my interpretation was that when it gets discovered it more or less goes into attack mode. So absorbing him was probably for later replication (speculation) and that it was able to replicate the Head Scientist like how palmer infected windows in the original, probably just bit him or something. Can only make guesses but yeah there are slight errors. Still loved it.

Really? I've herd that it might be. Though a lot of my friends think otherwise because on the trailor, the actors look like they are trying to resemble the old ones.
I hope it's a prequel, that would actually be pretty cool.

On IMDB, it's not the same names of the characters as the old one: [link] , so I'm pretty sure it is a prequel and not a remake.
I think it will be pretty awesome^^ I'm interested to see how today's CGI will compare with the original's. I love how even today it doesn't have that 'obviously fake' look to it.

It better be a prequel. Hollywood should learn horror remakes never get to far.

lol yep, you could.
I don't think they would remake a movie as amazing as this. They probably know how bad they'd get flamed, especially for this movie.
