Description
My tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made, John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".This is easily Carpenter's best film. All the elements - the writing, direction, acting, special effects, and music work together perfectly. It's got the fear of isolation AND paranoia, and some of the most brilliantly insane horror sequences ever put on film - thanks to Rob Bottin who, like Carpenter, was also doing the best work of his whloe career here. A perfect movie by any standard.

It'll be about the Norwegian camp and what happened when the Thing was first discovered along with the spaceship and such.

Amazing tribute for an amazing film. It saddens me that it's being remade, so completely unnecessary and unwarranted. And you know it's just gonna be cg'd to hell.

This is NOT a remake, but a prequel focusing on the Norwegian crew. It ends with the two Norwegians chasing the dog in their chopper

Oh really? I hadn't heard that. I suppose that's a little more acceptable than a strait up remake. Still kinda pointless and unnecessary if you ask me though. In the original you're never meant to know what actually happened at the Norwegian base camp, it was just this creepy mystery to build suspense. I never really needed to know what exactly happened there, and actually prefer not knowing. But that's just me.

My understanding is that the new movie is not a remake but a prequel, telling the story of the Norwegian scientific team that encountered (and was destroyed by) The Thing, before Kurt Russel and his American team showed up. It is too early for me to guess if I will like it or not.
"The Thing" is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. So naturally I am curious about this new film. But precisely because I love Carpenter's film so much, it will be even harder for the new movie to live up to my high expectations.
I don't mean to be a snob about it, but it's hard not to have very high (possibly even unrealistic) expectations, when judging a modern remake, sequel, or prequel, to one of your all time favorite movies that you have loved ever since you were a kid (I was 10 years old in 1982, when Carpenter's "The Thing" came out in theaters).
I was extremely picky about the 2010 remake of "The Wolfman" for the same reason, because the original film is one of my all-time favorites, so near and dear to my heart.
So if this "Thing" prequel is bad, I will despise it a thousand times worse than someone with only a casual interest. But if it is good, I will love it more than you can imagine. Time will tell!

I can't get why they think it's a remake i seen the trailer and it looks more like a prequel. I love Carpenter's The Thing since it shows how special effects from those days has shown that they where ahead of their time. I for one i'm not judging until i see it and also not having high expections since the remakes or something that follows a previous movie with a sequel or prequel they do kinda screw it sometimes, still i want to see how it will turn out.
btw Bryan ever wonder if they are planning on making some Thing comics? I actually enjoyed the comics from Dark Horse, a bit cheesy and could have come with better designs on the creatures but still fun to read.
being off topic have you seen Regular Show yet? Seriously i like the guys when they try to mix horror and comedy still my all time fav is the one with the zombies, too bad i can't say the same with the were-Skunk episode i feel they could have come up with a better story and adding a few Werewolf references like the Howling.

You're most welcome! Ah, I need to get The Thing on DVD, its so wonderfully crafted... Speaking of good horror movies, have you ever seen Tremors?

Yes of course, Tremors is fun!
The most recent DVD of The Thing looks fantastic and, believe it or not - the Blu Ray disk looks even better. The Thing is one of those favorites of mine where I can't help buying every version that comes out on every format... just to make sure I've got the best one!
