well you'll just have make an equally gorgeous one. That happens to me too, but I tell myself its better to let the baby go to a good home, where it will be admired, framed and cared for. Not just stuck in my portfolio gathering dust.

That looks great! Do you use any type of acrylic medium in your paints to make them more blendable? I can never get a good blending with acrylic....

bryancollins In reply to Rantul [2007-12-17 17:59:52 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I use a super secret, very custom special acrylic extender that I created myself. It's chemical makeup is H2O. So, if you are savvy in chemistry, you can decipher the formula and begin to use the stuff yourself. Seriously, that's all I use. I just keep my brush very clean and very wet. Sometimes I will use a spray bottle to lightly mist the canvas and my pallet. See if that helps you.

Rantul In reply to bryancollins [2007-12-18 21:17:17 +0000 UTC]
Hm, interesting. I usually use very wet brushes as well but I constantly find myself trying to blend too dry paint. Also the paint on my pallet dries before I can use it every now and again. I'm by no means an exceptionally slow painter or anything.
Do you mix the water directly into the paint or just keep your brush very wet?
I like the spray misting idea - I'll definitely try that. I just bought a liquid paint retarder to try that out for extending drying time, but it doesn't seem to be that effective and it makes the paint transparent. (My guess is that's it's simple glycerin which is often used to slow watercolor drying time.)
Thanks for the help

Sometimes I will mix water directly into the paint. Keeping the brush very clean is a large help, too. I will sometimes paint with just water on the brush, painting over areas that are not totally dry. This helps with blending.

Rantul In reply to bryancollins [2007-12-19 13:20:46 +0000 UTC]
Does that not dilute the paint and make it transparent?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
bryancollins In reply to Rantul [2007-12-19 18:10:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it does. That is what you want, when you want blending with acrylics. The transparency allows the underlying color to come through, giving the transition between the colors the 'illusion' of being blended. In other words, if you want to blend between (for example) a dark blue and a light blue, you start with zero water and lay your dark. Then lay your light on the other end. Then in between them, use varying ratios of paint to water to create transparent layers between the two non-diluted areas. This would be much easier if I could show you while I was doing it, but I don't want to put it on YouTube and give away all my techniques

Rantul In reply to bryancollins [2007-12-19 20:31:24 +0000 UTC]
Don't worry, I understand what you're saying. I've always been a fan of blending wet paint on the canvas itself but I can see how dilute transparent layers could be used for regular blending.
I'm leaning one painting at a time

Aren't we all. Every time I finish a painting, I want to go back and work on older ones to employ everything I just learned on the recent one. That must be why we continue to paint and paint and paint some more.
