Description Where do I start? This one came from the motivation to exemplify a child’s exploratory mind. In reality, the little boy in this painting could be sitting on a small block of wood in the center of a mud puddle in his backyard, but this is what he would see. As adults, when do we lose this creativity? When do we cast aside the backyard adventures of playing cards with mermen while an octopus-like creature seeks to take down our ship? Reality is necessary, but not as a direct replacement for the imagination.

Original is 16”x12” acrylic on canvas - SOLD

How did you do the textures? I love it ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryancollins In reply to Scyrens [2008-11-02 18:17:39 +0000 UTC]

Just different brushes and techniques. I use a toothbrush sometimes, and I even keep old battered brushes that have become uneven, so that I can get a rough look when I want it. The body of the blue/purple monster in the boat was done by lightly tapping the brush to the canvas over and over. This was a very experimental piece for me and I learned a lot from it.

I really like this. It shows a charmingly childish imagination on canvas in picture-book colors with lovely character. Well done!

And I can definitely identify with how we slowly lose our sense of creativity as reality gradually conquers our minds. I sometimes find myself yearning for the good ol' days when a cardboard box could easily be replaced with a spaceship or a simple blanket could substitute a superhero's cape. It's hard to find the right balance between work and play though.

bryancollins In reply to dramaqueen79 [2008-10-28 18:59:07 +0000 UTC]

That's when you have to make your work become play! Our state of being IS our state of mind.

Thanks for understanding the piece. That truly means a great deal to me.

This is very nice, your so very imaginative! And i'm glad that you understand how people tend to, lose their creativity, however, I think you prove that not everyone does.

Thank you. You are very kind. There is a fine line between keeping your childhood and being immature, but it is a goal we should all strive for.

I used to have the most insane imagination and now I'm just boring

bryancollins In reply to Rantul [2008-03-18 18:45:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sure that's not true. They say boredom sets into the boring mind, and I seriously doubt you have a boring mind.

Rantul In reply to bryancollins [2008-03-18 19:02:05 +0000 UTC]

Well maybe boring was an exaggeration But I definitely recognize that my creativity isn't a tenth of what it was when I was younger.

I used to be able to just sit there for hours and imagine the most bizarre things without anyone telling me I should be creative. Now I have to sit and brainstorm and force myself to think creatively. Most, if not all, of my good ideas (I believe) are strait from God - not me.

Agreed. I'm thankful that when I was a child most of my time was spent either with my nose in a book or playing outside, or making up stories involving various dolls and stuffed animals. I love your use of colour here, the reds and yellows in the sky and the blues and greens of the water just go really well together to me. And there's such a dreamlike surreal quality to it that really goes with your words.

beautiful painting! and i like your comments but i have to disagree. in order to lose your childishness, you'd have to force it to leave. when we become older, our imagination becomes more...composed. we use it in ways to make life better for us, i guess. im not quite old enough to understand it fully, i guess, not that age yet, but i kinda imagine thats what its like...
i think what im trying to say is that we dont replace our imagination, just use it differently.

woah, reading back on that it doesn't make much sense at all! oh well, i tried
anyways, whatever, it's a fantastic painting

bryancollins In reply to i-like-balloons [2008-03-16 19:02:50 +0000 UTC]

Maybe this case is true for you, but I am speaking from my observations of the majority. Most adults tend to become bored if they don't have a TV around, and this is creeping into the youth at a rocket-speed-rate. Even children are trading their imaginations for TV and Myspace. Some of use retain our imagination an use it productively into adulthood, but sadly, it is less and less common.

I included that little pill cause I just didn't want to get bombarded with comments about how if everyone lived in TOTAL imagination we would fall flat on our faces instead of facing real problems and solutions. You have to be very literal with people or many of them tend to get all uptight and finger-pointy. Ya know?

ReggieTuesday In reply to bryancollins [2008-03-15 19:11:38 +0000 UTC]

haha, yea, I know what you're saying. it wouldn't be good to live in a fantasy world every second of every day (however nice that would be). and I bet you would get the literal-minded people pointing that out a lot. still, I couldn't resist the jab
