I'm really digging this. It always amazes me when I see someone who's drawn a rather spectacular beard, as the process seems to elude me almost entirely.
I just bought some pastels, and am hoping to start practicing with them sometime this week. Seeing what other artists can do with the medium makes me super excited to get started. So, yes... color me impressed.

This and your other drawings inspire me to paint more people, and in greater detail. I especially like this one because there is something about the face (your face) that seems quintessentially masculine. I like it very much - the intense regard, the hair, the strong nose...just perfect.

Thank you so much, I am so pleased I inspire you.
Yes trying some work with more detail is something to try, but I also thnk you should continue your lovely style of conveying the body such as 'Blue Lady' & 'Woman in heaven'
Thank you for the lovely comments about my self portait

This is wonderful! I was quite fond of pastels many many years ago and wished I could have done something this realistic and detailed. Truly lovely work!

did you get soft pastels blocks or pastel pencils ?
I use a combination of both, I use nail files and car body sanding blocks to keep the pencils sharp. I also use blending stumps to smudge and define lines.
Hope that helps.

I got blocks, really thick and awkward to use I should try pastel pencils then! still I can't figure out how to achieve the degradation from shadow to light, since the eraser (both regular pencil and charcoal eraser) doesn't seem to do much work. Smudging with my fingers also brought poor results...tricky material

What paper are you using them on ..?
I only got in to pastels about 10 months ago so still learning them and pushing them to get exactly what I want, I could easliy move to coloured pencils but I love the tones I can achieve from pastels.

Ingres paper. I originally bought it for charcoal, but I thought it would suit for soft pastels as well. Maybe something with a smoother surface would be better. Anyway, drawing is experimenting! I'll find out what suits me best in time. Thanks a lot for everything, keep up the awesome work
