Description
Prismacolor pencils on Canson pastel paperWell my first attempt with Prismacolor pencils. So different to using pastels. One big difference, the time it takes to build layers. Think this has probably taken me 4-5 times longer than it would have if I had done it in pastels.
But I have quite enjoyed them. Use them again ... mmm we will see.
Many thanks to for the permission to use her beautiful image for my test piece for Prismas.

If you fav the piece, I thank you very much and appreciate you adding it to your favourites.

Lovely work!
I've been curious for sometime about prismacolor pencils but I've never got the chance, is it similar to pastels?

Thank you so much.
Pastels and Prismas... Worlds apart...
The Prismas have to be slowly built up in light fine layers and take forever and you have to be patient. They are amazing, but you have to learn to be slow in your approach and think about layering more.
Pastels, just add all the colours and blend with finger .. 2 mins compared to maybe an hours work or more to get the same effect with the Prismas

Amazing work! I agree with James, your work shows that the medium does not make the artist. The artist makes the medium. Love it.

Thank you so much.
I love that expression -
"The artist makes the medium."
So true ...

Your welcome! I truly belive that if the artist has a solid base, like drawing, everything else will still be solid. Just a matter of getting the mileage in the medium.

Brilliant work, Barry, and superbly brave of you to venture out of your comfort zone to create such a beautiful piece....and first time too....just goes to show that it certainly ain't the medium that defines the artist...that takes something else entirely from within

Thank you so much James for the lovely, kind comments. Sometimes it is nice to try a different medium and learn from it. There are definate positives I have learnt from the Prismas that will go back into my pastel work.

I think you realise as I do that the pencil or brush is but a tool, Barry, I don't think that you could make a bad work whatever medium you used....really is just a matter of what you like and feel comfortable with. but yeah it's nice to try out something different for a change

Oh yes for sure thats very true.
It is nice to try something new, I have continued playing with the Prismas and in my second piece I have been playing with a completely different technique to using them and the results so far are absolutely amazing.
Its probably not the usual way to use pencils, but hey who makes the rules ..
Will post when it is finished. The one thing is the time it takes using these pencils, but that gets overcome with the results and enjoyment.
Cheers

Absolutelly no rules pal, I think it's better to find your own way with drawing materials...heh heh I don't think I've even glanced at a pencil tutorial in my life! I suspect that you just have an in-built sense for these things
Will be watching to see what you do....bound to be great!

Beautiful Barry. You do very exceedingly well with pencils, but personally, I love your pastels the best - for my personal taste, they are more 'painterly!' But this is just a personal preference. Barrie

Oh definatley not giving my beloved pastel up. Wanted to try something different, esp for finer work. The ability to get the pencils to a very sharp point and them not going blunt after one stroke makes a difference.
Just looking for an alternative to my pastels for smaller pieces I do.
Thanks Barrie
