Description
My first tutorial I ever made. And it was so much fun to do so. To record every step from sketch to final work was a great experience for me.And i hope some of you will read it
And i made it because Jelly-Jiggler117 just asked for it. And I loved the idea. Thank you. This was just fun to do. And I hope my English is understandable.
And don't hate me please, if there are already too many tutorials for pixelpics.
Oh! All the sketches and pics (and even the backgrounds) were made by me
Ariel the little Mermaid, Android from Metropolis and Ridley Kirby.
Oh, before I forget. This tutorial is for pixeling pics with previous sketches. Like "the easy way of Pixel". It's like a Beginners Guide for people, who want to get pixelated pics but need the help of a previous sketch or image.
Ariel by Disney, Kirby bei Hal Laboratories, Ridley by Nintendo, Metropolis by ? (my brother said, I should sketch the android from metropolis... I think it's a movie)
If there is anything you can't understand, i will try to edit it
(writing in paint sucks...)

is a simple way to deal with the lineart, and thats fine.
what is really not right is the part of the shading/coloring. when one makes a tutorial, one has to bear in mind that you are teaching people how to do stuff, and that people asumes that the way you teach them IS the way to do it. by just picking colors and add/sustract lightness you're misleading people into creating color ramps that are dull and lack contrast. there is no explanation as to why you have to pick a certain amount of colors, why you should pick a certain amount of colors, or why pick some colors over others.
the shading part doesnt explain why you need to shade, how you need to shade, and what is shading. in fact all it tells is that you have to put there beacuse.. you have to. for something that explains you how to make something, it literally explains nothing and forces you to asume things out of nowhere.
the worst part is that step 6 is a completely and absolutely personal preference of who did the tutorial and has nothing to do with the process of making a sprite, and has nothing to do as a step of a spriting tutorial.
coloring the lineart is a terrible choice also, wich shows that there is no real knowledge of shading and or color choices. the lineart is jaggy and suffers from a lack of definition of the shapes in most cases.
what is even worse is that this is promoted as a daily deviation, wich was a completely bad decision. it does nothing but reinforce the idea that this is the way how things are done, instead of present it as "one posibility of how things could be done".

Excellent tutorial, couple of things in there I hadn't thought of like the 2x zoom, then PrtScn. I liked the comment about "real spriters sprite in Paint", although technically it isn't true since MSPaint is a MS Windows specific image editor. Linux people generally use GIMP (which there is also a Windows version of) or XPaint and Mac users tend to prefer Seashore (though they can also use GIMP but with a Windows-style interface, unless hacked, which is absolutely unacceptable for most of them ). I will say though, having layers is a great tool for doing the initial layouts and saving your original image. That way you never lose them if you decide to make a change (GIMP supports layers, btw).
As a side note, the new MSPaint in the Windows 7 Beta is a lot more advanced than the old Paint. It's like, the first major update to Paint since Windows 98. It includes SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and several other handy features you'll never use if you are into spriting. You can check out a screenshot I posted of it here: [link]

Well I prefer paint, because first i have Windwows, and second I like its simplicity. Okay, you might loose your details because you have just one layer, or you can't see anything or so on, but I see it as some kind of challenge.
And Photoshop (and its linux equivalent GIMP) need ages to load on my PC ...
And this new version of paint... does it come with vista?

JMcDouges In reply to Buci01 [2009-03-24 13:33:32 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately no, you will only be able to use the new Paint with Windows 7, which should be released sometime this fall (or at least Microsoft hopes so). And as a side note, Windows 7 is a lot better than Vista. It is essentially going to be like the XP to ME relationship: everyone hates ME because it is junk but loves XP (though Windows 7 still has a few of the Vista issues like hardware compatibility).
Really? Photoshop loads in about 15 seconds on my computer (with about 500 fonts installed) and GIMP only takes about 20 or so (still much longer than Paint, but they are a heck of a lot more powerful). You ever try Paint.NET [link] ? It supports layers and several other useful tools but isn't overly complicated and powerful. Also, it loads nearly as fast as Paint (about 3/4 second on my computer, which is about 1/4 second slower than Paint). As always, it's free. You will need to install the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 but you likely have that installed already (If you are running Vista, you automatically have 3.0 installed). If not, it is also free but a larger download. You can get 2.0 here: [link] , 3.0 here: [link] , and 3.5 (newest) here: [link] (Vista users only need 3.5, and XP users only need to download the highest version they desire. So don't download them all, waste of time )
Just because I'm in the mood, here's another excellent free tools for artists: Blender [link] . Blender is a free 3D Modeling / Rendering / Animation / Game Environment tool (and the best, by far). It has a very confusing interface, but the Wiki tutorials clear that up. It is nearly as powerful as Maya and 3DS Max and arguably more powerful in certain aspects. If you want a few examples of what other artists have done, check out their image gallery: [link] , their movie gallery: [link] . Heres the various tutorials: [link] , [link] , and [link] . And yes, I do know this last section sounded like some kind of infomercial .

Wow you seem to be in the mood to make free commercials for every opensource program out there
Well to start things, my PC is slow and "old", that means I have XP and my PC is in fact not compatible with Vista. And because my PC is so slow It takes me one to two minutes to load Photoshop or Gimp, but I use them as well, so don't worry
and I didn't even heard of the next Windows Version, so I am even more surprised that you have already screenshots of the new MS paint.
Now I have to check out all the programs you told me about

Lol, yeah if you can consider software collecting a hobby than I am one of it's best. I keep tabs on all of the latest and greatest free and open source software. Thanks to various Linux builds getting so popular, open source software is beginning to rival commercial software for quality. So, if you ever need a program to do something (like a replacement for Microsoft Office, in which case your best bet would be Open Office) just let me know, I likely already know the best tool for the job.
As for the newest Windows, I have been running the beta on my computer since it was released back in January (I was lucky and got it on the first day, before they temporarily took it down due to high demand). And don't be surprised you haven't heard of it, I'm a tech geek so I always know what's new. You should see some of the new technology we will be getting in a couple of years. A lot of people think Blu-ray is awesome but R&D companies already had better technologies working before it was even released mainstream (like HVD). Just like Blu-ray was working a long time ago.

I'm into pixel art myself, but some people don't realize the same rules of lighting applies to pixel art pieces too!
The shading seems to pillow-y, or pillow shaded, and that is not something to get use to when pixel arting.
π: 0 β©: 1
Buci01 In reply to Theiving-Imp [2009-03-04 07:51:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, i know what you mean. The shading isn't really great. If I knew this would get... well... popular in like one day, I would have edited it long ago.
Like crossshading:"Never let a coloured Pixel Block meet another Block with the same colour"
I would say, check out my other pixel pieces and see if I got the shading better done.

In step 4 isn't it a little hard to color all in the inside!?, maybe even a little bothersome?...
π: 0 β©: 1
Buci01 In reply to DaisukeReds [2009-03-04 07:43:42 +0000 UTC]
What do you mean by colouring inside? It is the goal of Pixel Art to use as few colours as possible, if you don't colour the inside, you get a lot of artefacts and all the little errors...
Well... it IS Pixel Art, so it IS pretty time consuming and bothersome
