Description This is one concept I've had for the Proving Grounds project. A double entendre displaying that not only are the Floating Lands are not only floating aimlessly between dimensions, but are in fact literally floating. Most of the lands are connected by land bridges, but there are a few free-floating islands isolated from the mainlands.

It is just a concept right now, but may be used if people like it.

I think you drew this wonderfully. I don't know...the idea of the islands literally floating is quite romantic to me. Even if it's not completely original, it still can lead to more original things happening in each story told.

...is that a second sun there, I see?

Yeah, that's what we're going with: Floating Lands.

And I think that was probably more of a moon.

I don't know why I thought sun, but moon I can understand, lol

hah! Awesome Especially that little island on the left with the farmhouse/lighthouse/whatever that is. It sorta reminds me a bit of the game "Skies of Arcadia" (an awesome game for the much-underrated Dreamcast, at that), though I have to wonder now if there are any sky pirates roaming about >_>

You are, like, the third person to mention that game.
I have never heard of it before.

Perhaps that's a cue to look into it ^-^

But try to get the Dreamcast version, if you can... The "re-release" for the Gamecube is... well... to say it is rather poor would probably be complementing it >.< I won't get into detailed discussion of it, but it's definitely not as good at all.

I can really see your passion for this project come through, how much thought and effort you put into this is marvellous, excellent concept too

People seem to like this concept for the Floating Lands setting. I might just make it cannon.

That would be pretty darned nifty. I can just imagine it.

That's a good thing.
People are going to need to be able to imagine it.

I kinda wish our world was like that. I think it'd be awesome.

Yeah, that's similar to the first image I had in mind when I was thinking about the Floating Lands. It looks incredible in your style, too.

Also, I was wondering, do you have an idea of how big these land are going to be? I mean, will the Floating Lands be like a bunch of small islands, or is it like a massive, floating continent with smaller chunks of land floating around it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bug-Off In reply to TBPow [2011-02-16 04:37:32 +0000 UTC]

I want there to be land masses big enough that it won't have you thinking about the edges and can hold geological structures like mountains, caves, rivers, and lakes. But I think it would be cool if these large masses were accented by smaller masses that you can walk across in a few hours and some even smaller ones that aren't even connected to the main lands.

TBPow In reply to Bug-Off [2011-02-17 03:52:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that sounds good to me. Now we just need someone to make a map of the Floating Lands.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bug-Off In reply to TBPow [2011-02-17 06:00:26 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking about that too.
I'm not sure if that's something we need before we start making comics, or afterward so that we can simply piece it together from what the artists have already made.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TBPow In reply to Bug-Off [2011-02-17 13:36:04 +0000 UTC]

Maybe we could start by creating the main landmass and primary cities and towns (and other areas), and just make a good chunk of the land uncharted, so that other artists can add new places to the pre-established map as their characters explore the Floating Lands.

Bug-Off In reply to TBPow [2011-02-17 16:31:28 +0000 UTC]

I could get behind that.

Once you're here, it won't let you leave.

I thought it would be a good idea to have dense clouds under the land so that the sun can "set" and "rise" without seeing it under you.

This is very much like one of the regions from my Dreamworld. The Kingdom of Avia was a bunch of floating chunks of land orbiting the Kamo Mountain, the tallest mountain in the realm of Morpheus. They rode giant eagles to get from one island to the next.
Not exactly the same, obviously, but similarities exist. Coincidence?
Who cares? It's awesome!

Freyad-Dryden In reply to Bug-Off [2011-02-15 20:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Yet another reason why I want to get involved. See, part of the cosmology of my multiverse is that all realities are extensions of the thoughts of the Eldritch Gods and they are all connected through the dimension known as the realm of dreams, which all minds touch in their sleeping state. This serves as the explanation for why certain elements of stories get repeated in all cultures, even those in that exist in isolation of others. I've always wanted to have collaborative efforts on the dreamworld stuff to sort of simulate it being made up of the minds of many.
This is pretty close to that. In some ways, I'm looking at the proving grounds as an arm of the Dreamworld. It all fits really neatly into everything I've wanted to build.

Bug-Off In reply to Freyad-Dryden [2011-02-16 04:43:45 +0000 UTC]

And we both thought of it rather independently!

...Hmmm....

Freyad-Dryden In reply to Bug-Off [2011-02-16 05:40:46 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes, I wonder if I'm not actually on to something with my Dreamworld cosmology. And then I take my pills and don't think about it for a while.

But yes, "Hmmmm" indeed.
