Description Wow! Nice job by ginkovisuals.deviantart.com/ making a full color 3D graphic of my design for Castle Number One built4ever.deviantart.com/art/… . Please direct technical questions to them, not me! To see the original design sketch done in pencil, see my gallery. This is an original design for a "personal luxury castle," but it could easily be a medieval game playing environment or the setting for a novel. I don't have a floor plan for it yet!

My comments on this: They interpreted certain things like roof tile color and stone color their own way. I think it's very well done, very accurate. In this case, red ceramic tile roof and medium greyish brown stone color throughout. Shadowing is very dramatic, obviously this is depicted in strong sunlight.

If anybody has $50 million dollars or so laying around and wants to spend it, just e-mail me.

HMMM very good question. Simulating stone walls gets very tricky for example. How do we make it look authentic? Walls have to be insulated to minimum standards, insulation gets higher as you build farther north. Structurally, would it make more sense to build the high tower with steel framing? What about wind and earthquake codes? It has to be able to stand up to lateral forces, depending on wind load requirements and earthquake zone. Codes in Europe are also very strong and tough to deal with. Same with Japan, heavily regulated construction processes and industry.

Basically, yes, it can be done, but the cost is extremely high to do this and make it look and feel authentic. Almost prohibitive. Here's a link to a winery I've visited in Napa valley, California. Very authentic look to a "castle" construction, but it must have been very expensive. You can't sell enough wine to pay for it I think!

Wow that does look like the real deal! However since it's not a residence, maybe they were able to get away with things like tiny windows?
I guess this is why only billionaires can entertain the idea of building their own castle, lol.

Yeah, I HAVE been approached a few times already to design a "real castle as a home," and I usually say, if you don't have millions to spend, it's probably not for you.

I just have to know out of morbid curiosity, how much would you ask that your client have in the way of a spending budget before even considering an authentic castle build?
Also, how would someone find skilled craftsmen to do the artistic stone masonry, or carpenters for all the decorative wooden paneling? I just assumed these kind of things weren't done anymore because the more advanced aspects of these trades fell out fashion, and thus also out of practice.

Yes true, very difficult to find the craftsman, so they cost a lot! Budget: very dependent on the craziness of what they want. Hard to answer without a rough idea of size and complexity.  Do they want "real" stone walls? 20' high? 50' high? on and on. Need more info to throw a number out there.

Well let's say the client was operating under the philosophy of "Go big or go home", and wanted something like Chateau de Pierrefonds: i.redd.it/dyctnflu62101.jpg
He'd also want to exterior to look like it had been around for centuries, like the real deal. Real stone walls are a must, if the building is supposed to look like it was originally a fortress with many centuries of renovations right?

Yeah, you could be talking about hundreds of millions really! It's on the edge of unbuildable in today's market, with today's craftsman. Back then, labor was dirt cheap, there was NO insurance and minimal to zero taxes on labor/materials. Stone locally quarried. Cheap to build a castle!

BTW, no cheating allowed.

It looks a bit Germanic in style. I'd go for Loire French, but not Chambord. I like the earlier, simpler style. More elaborate than Tarascon, but with the simple elements.

Beautiful job you did on the drawing, and beautiful job they did on the 3D graphics.

Some minor influence came from German castles fer sure. I looked quickly at a few right before I doodled the sketch for this.

I suspect that it would cost quite a lot more than 50 million dollars, at least 100 million total.
