Description This little hamlet/village is a small center for wine, specialty foods, and a few artisans. There's a small plaza to the right with a fountain, and various small shops and homes scattered about along the main road. Side roads lead to some of the vineyards and wineries in the area. The mesa up top will eventually feature a Mediterranean villa/castle with a distinct Italian emphasis.

I drew all the roof material as the same color to unify the roofscape. Exteriors have some stucco finishes, in white and tan, and maybe a little brick and stone. Small streams and waterfalls can be found throughout.

Technique: A pencil sketch on toned paper. I use Canson paper and cut it to size to fit in a binder easily. Pencils include 2H to 2B. I used white and terra cotta red watercolor to add accents. This kind of limited palette gives a nice effect, emphasizing the beautiful and varied roofscape. Finally, I added a few details and accents with a Micron brown ink pen with a very fine tip.

Note: ground plan added recently, with some general dimensions and emphasis on the beautiful tile roofscape.

The original is very small, so a typical computer screen is bigger than the original drawing size.

I've been asked a few times recently. I have to discipline myself to scan the art work 4 times or so during process. Then I can explain each step.

Wow, a really technical landscape sketch.
You have good draftsmanship. I really respect
and encourage your art.

Have you ever seen Indian architectures of stupas?
Are you going to draw villages in each different climate/landscape?

I'm pretty impressed..

Built4ever In reply to Hackpth [2013-05-25 01:55:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, of course, but I'm no expert on it. There's some excellent architecture out there. Maybe I should do a village scene with an Indian theme?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hackpth In reply to Built4ever [2013-05-25 09:46:52 +0000 UTC]

A village scene with an Indian theme could be a nice
change of pace, a little challenge.

There is a temple called Visvanatha temple that is an example of
the character of some Indian architecture. Here's a photo: [link]

The rockiness (limestone?) and asymmetry of the profile is appealing.
The platform, stairs, belvedere, and unusual rooftops make for a really
earthy kind of architecture to me.

I believe you could do a great job if you tried at catching the texture,
depth, and ambience of architecture like Visvanatha temple. You really
are an excellent draftsman.

MitchMitton In reply to Built4ever [2013-05-24 01:39:52 +0000 UTC]

well you have a large number of people that have been to your site and to me that means possible customers. So I think something that will fit in some stock frame sizes. Nothing to big and that way with the printed on quality paper you can get some volume sales. There is always money to be made if you have a quality product.
