Description This is a hallway upstairs in an old abandoned movie theater that has since been torn down. For all of my childhood, this was the only option in terms of movies iin the area. I saw the first movie I'd ever seen in theaters here (The Land Before Time) and it has lots of pleasant memories for me. It was a little disconcerting to see it in such a state. And it was extremely creepy, of course.

(Yes, I was trespassing.)

Trespassing for the sake of ART! That's pretty legal in my books. I think I've done it a couple times.
Wow... the Land Before Time. I think I watched through the 6th and then quit. They ought to be on episode 15 by now.
Question: was this in Denton? I'll be very sad to have missed out on it. This reminds me of the skating rink... I've got endless childhood memories there and now it's being turned into a weird-o fitness place.

As for the photo, I really like the eerie feeling you get. The tone and contrast are good, as well. It's an awesome shot, and I'm glad to see somebody else that appreciates the art in the strangest of things.

Thanks, I'm glad you don't condemn my activities.

No actually, this was in Texarkana. I hear you on the skating rink. There was one in my hometown, but now it's a church. It's very strange to see that place now.

Thank you!

Don Bluth rocks and I watched that movie like a twelve times a day when I was a kid. Literally. That's really cool to see and to hear. Definitely sounds a bit disconcerting.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY for trespassing

I always love your lower light/night/ green toned shots. I wish I could get that down on my own. course I spose it would help if I actually went out at night and took some shots to practice with huh?

heh, I knew you'd appreciate the illegal aspect.

thanks! I need to get out and do some night photography again too. I haven't done any in quite some time.

My only advice would be to take a tripod. They're indispensible.

It's weird how you can remember all of the memories from your childhood here, and then these photos of when you were wandering. Then, out of no where its gone, and that's all you have left.

BurlapZack In reply to piccolo [2005-05-07 06:54:35 +0000 UTC]

you said it. It still bugs me that there's just a pile of rubble left there. I finally understand a little of why my parents would always tell me stories of how 'this used to be a Safeway, this used to be a Piggly Wiggly, this is the bakery where I had my first job, etc.'

the crop circle stains on the ceiling, that maw of a light, the loudspeaker pointing at nothing but blank walls and an empty hall. verry nice.

the whole place smacks of a green-eyed carnivore. Truly, we were in the beast's lair.

it really was. With no competition, they over-charged for a shoddy theater for years and years. it felt very old. But in a weird way, it also felt a lot bigger. Because a lot of the chairs had been removed from the theaters, so it was just a big open space, kind of like a cave. And we could explore upstairs where all the projectors used to be. We even found the manager's office and some old records, and all sorts of strange rooms up there.

the land before time was the first movie you saw in a cinema?...me too! that film kicked ass...but it scared me a bit cause of all the loud noides alas the cinema I saw it in has been converted to a Chicago Rock Cafe...bum

it looks straight out of a horror film to me....there's going to be something terrible down that corridor, in the shadow - just waiting for trespassers to venture...

I like the colour in it - that green is particularly evil...and the lighting is great - nice work

BurlapZack In reply to aloneinkyoto [2005-04-14 17:03:09 +0000 UTC]

awesome! yeah, it scared me too! Don Bluth and his intense children's movies.

It felt like something straight out of a horror movie. Me and my buddy Dylan kept freaking ourselves out thinking about what could be hiding in the deep shadows in that place. And we kept on hearing noises in other part of the theater ever so often, which made things worse. thanks for the comment!

I had a favorite theatre much like yours that was shut down, it's such a shame. I think this picture captures your mood and the state of the theatre beautifully (although I never would have guessed where/what it was without the comments). The lighting, as well as the entire picture, is excellent. Why did you call it Heavy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BurlapZack In reply to giznot [2005-04-14 16:58:17 +0000 UTC]

thank you very much! the lighting in the place was perfect for photos like this. Half of the lights were turned off/not working anymore, so there would be patches of light followed by inky darkness.

I called it Heavy because it looked to me like the place was collapsing under its own weight. Or age. And it also just had a 'heavy' atmosphere to it. It was hard to breath and it was a very eerie place.

thanks for the comment & fav.
