Description The blackness that had washed over everything was fading away like ink washed away, and Nicole looked around, finding her surroundings to be made of coding and data... This was the digital realm, but it resembled a city she suddenly remembered. Her head hurt as it was flooded with memories of a world she'd once lived in, where things were so different from the world she'd been in for the past few months... This place...it was home.

She got to her feet, seeing a giant chess board set up nearby, some of the pieces still in play. Had she been playing before? She couldn't remember... But she remembered a friend she'd lost... A dear friend that was like her... Not organic, but alive just the same. She missed him... He didn't deserve that kind of death, to be wiped out of existence with a single wave of the hand.

"Hey Nicole."

Nicole whipped around at the voice, her eyes falling on a familiar figure standing behind her. His robotic form had been replaced by one looking truly organic, like her form was, and the way he'd always wanted to be... "Shard...!?" she whispered. "I-I'm sorry I left, Shard! It was Eggman! He rewrote the world, and-"

Shard winked. "Eh, I'm not mad. How could I be mad at a face like yours?" He was silent for a moment, then smacked his forehead with a frustrated groan, his form glitching out a little with the movement. "DANG IT! I practiced it and it still came out awful!...I suck...!"

Nicole ran over and placed her hands on his cheeks, smiling softly as tears threatened to fall down her own cheeks. "Shard...! B-But I thought you were destroyed by the Genesis Wave...!"

Shard shrugged. "Maybe I was... I know my body is scrap, because I can't feel it. I'm a wandering program in this system, some might consider me a virus, if you think about it."

Nicole grinned. "We'll build you a new body! I'll make sure of it! You'll be free to travel in the real world again..."

Shard sighed. "The real world... It still might not accept me."

"But I will, Shard... I'll accept you, no matter what anyone else thinks!"

Shard smiled, putting a hand on the back of her head and pulling her close. "Then that's all that I need..."

A contest entry for 's Shardicole Contest over on .

I had so many ideas on what to do, but the one I loved the most was just Nicole coming home to the digital realm she knew, and finding Shard still alive within it. His body was destroyed in the fight with Metal Sonic, but he was transferred into the mainframe of the computer to save him, and he reformatted himself to look more organic, like Nicole did, and waited for her.

AAAAAAAAAAAND once again, Nicole looks nothing like any other time I've ever drawn her. I need to make a sheet and draw just her until I can get something consistent...

Characters belong to Archie.

Art belongs to me.

AAAA Finally leaving a comment on this, haha! Here is your proper comment! ;D
I absolutely love the theme of this! I've often wondered what it would be like if a piece of Shard was somehow left fragmented in Nicole's network after the Wave and how she would react to finding him. This image captures that whole concept beautifully, and the short story in the description really drives the point home. The composition of the image is really nice, and I love how it is a bit off center to give the impressive of a vast space within the digital world. Their expressions are great and I love the little detail of Nicole being the one getting more emotional. Given that of the two, she's always been a bit more emotionally composed, it's really sweet to see her kind of come to terms with her feelings. I love that you also got unique with Shard's design and gave him your own spin! And for the story, short as it might be, it's adorably sweet. The interaction between them is wonderfully in character, and Shard's little blunder and embarrassment is particularly charming. The closing sentences were absolutely perfect and I think personified the theme of hope the very most. Even when everything else is against them, they stand together, and that is what matters.
Overall, the combination of the image and the story is really powerful and does a great job getting the theme across! Thank you so much for entering my contest!

Thank you, that really means a lot. Since my entry was one of the first, I didn't have much to compare to it, but as more and more entries came in, I started to feel like it wasn't that good, and it made me a little sad.

But your comment, it made me feel better and made me feel like I had successfully portrayed the theme, and even if I don't win the contest, it still makes me happy to know it wasn't lostbamdist the other entries.
