Description
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Add_M-…CRACK! A loud clap of thunder echoed somewhere in the distance.
Skiff sighed. He knew Joe had been right of course, but he couldn’t possibly resist taking the children out on just one more trip, especially when their eyes were so damn sparkly. Well he got what he deserved; sitting alone in the small cabin bar on the far southern coast of Sodor. He’d be able to navigate his little rail boat back to his harbour once the storm died down. Of course that could be hours yet, and Skiff could only take so many more coffee’s so that barman didn’t kick him out for loitering. (Not that the mixologist had said this, it was simply Skiff’s insecurities keeping him on edge) Even so, the sailor couldn’t help but wish the man was a better conversationalist. Storms were terrifying, and the little cabin bar was mostly made of wood to give it an ‘authentic’ Mediterranean theme.
Suddenly, the little saloon door swung open, letting in even more rain than before. A tall, broad man stood in the entrance, illuminated by the lighting in the horizon. Skiff knew he had seen this man before, but couldn’t quite place where.
The figure wasted no time in bundling himself into the cabin. He was soaked from head to toe, and looked in a worse condition than Skiff felt.
Despite being the only one sat at the bar, Skiff moved right a place, out of respect for this familiar stranger.
The other sat down in Skiff’s old seat, looking grateful for the minimal shelter the cabin provided from the storm.
“One Palm-tree Island please” He requested to the silent mixologist “Nice and smooth”
Skiff suddenly recognised the man. It was Captain, the main coastguard for the Sodor Search and Rescue centre. And if Skiff was right to assume, had probably also been caught in the storm.
Captain felt him staring, and grinned at the younger figure.
“Storm caught you too huh?”
Skiff nodded. That was fairly obvious.
“You’re the little sailboat sailor aren’t you? Gee, that storm’s pretty intense. Is your ship ok?”
Skiff felt this wasn’t the right time to point out that his vehicle was just a sailboat, not a ship. He supposed Captain was just being friendly.
“I just wanted to please the children with one more tour” Skiff admitted “I probably should have listened to Joe’s warning about the weather, but they looked so excited I couldn’t let them down. Only I couldn’t make it back to Arlesburgh in time”
Captain nodded thoughtfully. It was a very useful thing to do. Reckless, but with good intention. Captain decided he liked this.
“Well luckily for us the storm’s only a little one - big enough to throw off small boats of course – but there shouldn’t be any lasting damage”
“I supposed that is good” Skiff replied meekly. He was just glad of hearing another voice in this strange, lonely little bar.
“You’re quite tenacious to make it up that Cliffside though” Captain continued “I nearly had trouble with those steps myself”
Skiff glanced quickly at the lifeguard’s physique, puzzled. Skiff’s railboat tours required minimal physical effort, and so the man hardly ever had a chance to ‘work out’ like Gordon or the other strong engine drivers. But Captain was part of the Search And Rescue Team – a team of some of the most athletic workers on Sodor. Belle and Flynn the fire fighters were strong and fearless, Butch was rough and ready, Rocky was awesomely strong and even Harold had been spotted at the gym from time to time. Captain’s lifeguard work required running, swimming, hauling and saving lives. How could a small cliff with stairs be enough to tire him?
Then again, the man had probably been working. There were signs of obvious fatigue, although he hid them well. Skiff had not been doing any of that stuff when he got blown off course.
“You know the team is always looking for recruits. You could just be a trainee” Captain suggested. Your little sailboat can only operate in fine conditions. We operate in all conditions” He gestured to the storm outside
“Exciting” Skiff smiled, trying not show that he hadn’t been listening to the stuff beforehand.
“Exciting is exactly the word” Captain beamed, downing his shot “We’d be glad to give you a go”
“A go?” The young sailor asked, suddenly snapping back to earth.
“A training course, silly” The lifeguard chuckled “Get a taste of the sea when it’s really rough”
“Oh my” Skiff’s topaz eyes blinked anxiously. Despite owning his little boat, he still wasn’t used to sea water in his face, nor the rocking of the waves much.
“The motorboat’s much smoother than sail if that’s what you’re worried about” Captain pressed on, sensing hesitation “It’s just the sea that’s rougher”
“I’m not sure I like rough” the sailor murmured, closing his eyes.
“Well the offer’s always open” the coastguard shrugged, trying not to appear too forceful.
Skiff thought about it. He enjoyed excitement, he enjoyed the sea, and he was always eager to make new friends. His lips twitched, and Captain took that as a yes.
“Excellent! A drink for my friend please, sir” Captain beckoned the unspoken barman over.
Skiff couldn’t stand any more caffeine. He was rather hoping for just a glass of water.
“So I’ll see you at 2?”
“Two what?”
“2 o clock. Lifeguard lesson number 1: Timing is everything” Captain grinned.
Skiff wondered what on Sodor he had signed up for.

Whoo - I was not expecting to get this finished so soon but here we are
Felt like drawing more of my favourite boats after watching 'Skiff And The Mermaid' and 'Rocky Rescue' (Captain is SO precious in Rocky Rescue
Skiff's probably in his early twenties here, Captain's kinda early/mid thirties.
I don't think 'they're both boats' is such a bad reason to warrant interaction XD I think they'd be good friends!
'They're both twins' works for me too remember
Feel free to take this piece 'anyway' you wish I guess
