The loud horn signalled an end to a busy day’s work at Blue Mountain Quarry. The last few stones were hauled into position, and the men came down from their large cranes and hopped out of their engines. On the very far side of the quarry, where the gravel machines had begun to cease grinding, two figures were emerging from the building, their faces smudgy and clothes covered in dust.

“Nothing like a day of crushing stones to work out the ol’ muscles” The male crowed vainly, flexing a bicep as he closed the cab door of his narrow gauge hybrid.
“Nothing like a day of crushing stones to make ye miss the sight of grass and trees you mean” the female sighed; running her fingers over the side of her seafoam green engine.

“Grass and trees?!” Gareth laughed, mocking Felicity’s accent ever so slightly. “if you ask me, people that ponce around working with ’grass and trees’ are hardly ever useful workers” the Welshman smirked “all they do is flit about and stroll leisurely along the rails, taking as much time as they need ... bah. Those workers that drive passengers wouldn’t know the first THING about hard work”

“Well that’s not true” Felicity thought for a while “Thomas drives passengers, and he’s worked up here before!”

“Only when Topham tells him too” Gareth pouted “I bet that express fellow doesn’t know the first thing about quarry work”

“Well ... whatever” Felicity sighed irritably. Her best friend had been going on like this for ... a while now. Constantly degrading other workers and claiming that none of them knew ‘real work’. Well ... so WHAT if some people did a little less work? So long as they were all really useful.

Truth be told, Felicity was beginning to tire of her duties in the quarry. As a much younger kid, she had enjoyed the hustle and bustle of hauling stones, getting covered in dust and jumping whenever the loud bangs from the distance went off. Now she found them ... uncouth. She had been spending longer and longer with her mother at Ulfstead castle, and found the whole experience much more enjoyable. The castle air was clean and natural, the park was beautiful, and the castle itself was ... très magnifique. Blue Mountain Quarry was dirty, loud and utterly, boringly ... grey. Not to mention stoney.

Oh sure, the quarry workers were nice enough. Her father for a start, and the older employees too. For the moment, she had Gareth. This didn’t seem like such a privilege when the teenager was being so unnecessarily rude. He was sitting on the front of his engine at the moment, not satisfied with snubbing the passenger drivers and was now also insulting Percy’s mail run, the Waste-dump workers and the seamstress at the Steamworks clinic.

By this time, Felicity had had enough. How she could ever have thought Gareth was best friend material was beyond her. He hadn’t been the same since he came back from the diesel works a few months ago, and Felicity also hadn’t seen him leave the quarry ever again since. She would have paid more attention to this, if Gareth then hadn’t struck a personal blow in his ‘uselessness’ rant.

“And as for those Ulfstead workers – URGH. They REALLY wind me up – who employed two pensioners and a damsel – no offense” Gareth coughed, suddenly remembering who’s company he was in.

A few months ago, Felicity would have laughed this off – a joke, nothing serious. Now she felt the sting on a more personal level. She was upset. Then there was trouble.

“For your information, Garth, I think you’ll find that Ulfstead is a wonderful place! More history and art than you’ll ever know, I’m sure”

“It’s all pointless though! You go in, you look at some 16th centaury fart’s underwear, then it’s lunch on the grass surrounded by rabbit dung”

“And spending all day looking at limestone is preferable to a vast expanse of insight into the past?”

Garth shrugged, wiping dust off his nose with the back of his hand.

“At least what I’m doing affects NOW. Why SHOULD I care what brand of sugar Sir.Old geeser liked to eat with his morning porridge? Or how many sodding servants it took to plump enough pillows for his great fat ars–”

“I hope you two won’t hang around chatting too long” Skarloey suddenly appeared from nowhere, brushing past his nephew with a ‘language’ warning glare. “It’s getting too dark to go wondering around the quarry alone”

“No need to worry” Gareth smirked smugly “I can protect me and little Fi-fi quite easily”

That really wound Felicity up. She had hoped her friend would be able to redeem himself enough to change her mind. But the pact was sealed, and she knew she wouldn’t last another day in the quarry in the company of her arrogant companion.

“Wait! Skarloey?” She called after the older worker, who stopped respectfully. “I ... can you tell dad that I’m taking up mom’s offer?” She sighed sadly.

“Oh ... of course I’ll tell him” Was all the red jacketed man said, before he left in the direction of the dorms.

“What offer?”

“The earl’s offer” Felicity pronounced Earl as if he were some higher being.

Gareth frowned, then his face turned as red as the jacket he wore.

“You’re LEAVING aren’t you!”

“I am” the girl sighed. “I have you to thank for that, Gareth”

“You really can’t handle the truth about those workers?! Urgh! You BELONG at the castle then – I’m sure you’ll be a really useless worker there too” He sneered coldly.

Felicity backed up a little, standing threateningly above the smaller Welshman. Even though there was not much between them in terms of age, the Irish girl still managed to tower over him impressively. MOST people towered over Gareth.

“And I think you suit the quarry” She sneered right back “Maybe one day the quarry noise will drown out your pathetic whining”

And she turned on her heel, leaving her ex-friend in shock.

“Y-you can’t come crawling back you know!”

“You wouldn’t notice if I did!” She laughed, taking one last gulp of quarry air before heading down the mountain side, her green locks hidden from view over the gravel trucks.
Gareth made some rather ugly comments under his breath, checking to make sure his uncle wasn’t near to lecture him. He had told the truth, and if Felicity didn’t like it, then he didn’t like her. You only ever got something out of life the hard way. The welsh teenager rubbed his eyes furiously with the back of his hands. As he did so, his hand brushed over the scars on his nose and cheek. Boys didn’t cry. He’d learnt that the hard way.

And yes, whilst I can't draw humans, my vehicles are worse so let's stick with humans pls, thanks

If i'm being blunt, Felicity is still not my absolute favourite oc, but this arc is the most fun so far!

Poor Gareth both deserves what's coming to him, and doesn't deserve what HAPPENED to him - more on that later perhaps
