I uploaded the lineart if you'd like to color along.

If there's anything else I'm forgetting or questions you still have PLEASE let me know~!!!
Also, if there is interest, I'd like to make another that considers things like complex backgrounds, different skintones, textures (like fabric, fur, and metal, etc), translucent things, etc...PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you'd be interested in that, too.

Very comprehensive, thank you! I've always been afraid of alcohol markers but I just bought some yesterday and plan to master them! Your tutorial makes them less scary.

I haven't had a chance to play with Copics yet, but I'm planning on learning, and this tutorial makes me feel like I'll have a good starting point -- it's so clear and you explain a lot of things that other tutorials sort of magically assume I know...

Thanks!!!! <3

This is really really helpful! I have just started colouring with copics and while I am not struggling as much as I thought I would, this is so helpful to me! **Note to self.. get blender..

I'm happy you find it helpful! Copics and markers in general are awesome and fun to work with. I think they're easier than watercolor, but I guess that's just opinion (everyone is different, afterall). I'd love to be able to see what you make with markers, so please do show me when you get a chance.

Just a little tip about the Blender: If you lay it down heavily before colouring, it will keep the surface wet so you can colour large areas without worrying about streaking.

This is a great tutorial !! Sadly I don't have Copic markers (I only got some PITT markers but not nearly enough colors to actually color something xD), but your tutorial was really helpful, even when coloring with traditional paint (which I do occasionally ^^). Oh and I'd love to see more of those tutorials
!

This should work even with pitt markers, but I totally understand not having enough colors. I started out with only a few, myself. I'll try to make another tutorial, and thank you for your kind words!

Yes I would be interested in more marker tutorials. I never liked coloring with markers because they leave this line if you overlap them and don't blend well but I see now that with the right markers and technique the coloring can look nearly identical to digital art! (Haha frikken cool) and you blend them SO well I never knew that was possible with markers!

I'll try to get on making a new tutorial soon! ^^
That was always the draw for markers for me; that you can blend them, and they blend well, and you can do some amazing things that way. You just need to be sure you're using equipment that works for you (doesn't always need to be Copic brand...but that's always been my personal favorite.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you can create if you give it a shot! <3

No no, thank you for your comments. I appreciate it.
Markers are awesome and a lot of fun! So I hope you have a good time using them; please don't get frustrated if you have trouble at first. It happens to us all! ^^ But hang in there, and please show me your work when you're done.
Also, please feel free to ask if you have any questions. I'll try my best to answer. <3

Yeah so far im having fun, but its my first time, so Im struggling a bit, Mind giving some tips about how to apply a light blush over a layer of copic, without it looking like the character is blushing furiusly?
π: 0 β©: 1
bybystarlight In reply to canadianfelicity [2013-05-19 23:36:50 +0000 UTC]
If you have a light pink color you can just lay that down on top of your skin layer (before or after is fine, but it works best when wet, so it blends better). Or if you have a medium to dark pink, you can lay it down BEFORE your skin layer and blur the heck out of it with the colorless blender.
Failing that, if you have colored pencils or pastels that works very well, too.
Let me know if that helps? ^^

Yeah thats really useful! Thanks XDD Um I know this may sound stupid...but um...whats a blender? Sorry, im new to this art stuff...(just getting into highschool)
π: 0 β©: 1
bybystarlight In reply to canadianfelicity [2013-05-20 05:05:44 +0000 UTC]
No no. Please don't say that. No question is ever stupid!!
A blender is a marker that's filled with colorless ink. Basically pure alcohol (not the kind you can drink though lol) and no color. You use that to kind of blend or blur the colors of the other markers, or you can use it like water in watercolor paints. Like making the paper wet so the paint (or in this case, ink) goes on better.
Please let me know if this makes any sense, lol. I can be bad at explaining stuff. XD
If you don't have a colorless blender (in Copics, it's color number 0), you can use rubbing alcohol you might have in your bathroom medicine cabinet. Just use a cotton swab or a paint brush to apply it to your paper and it will work almost nearly as well.
I hope that helps? I'm here if you need anything! <3

Yes. You explained really well to me, thanks XDD Due to my tendancy to fall and scrape my skin, I used all the rubbing alcohol, so i'll just buy a blender. You can get copic markers and Colour blenders at michael's right? I got my Copic markers while I was in China...(visiting family)

bybystarlight In reply to canadianfelicity [2013-05-26 21:51:42 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you should be able to get it at Michael's, though it's a lot more expensive there. Ahh, I want to go to China!
I'm clumsy too! XD

On a totally random note, there are several things you can do for masking other than using masking tape that are highly effective and generally harmless to your work :3
1. Use drafting tape. This stuff is awesome! It has less adhesive than normal masking tape so you don't have to get lint all over it first. It's the perfect balance of enough adhesive to keep ink from leaking under it but little enough to not rip your paper to shreds! We use it all the time for drafting in architecture studio, hence the name "drafting tape". It's stupidly expensive (like, 7-8 dollars a roll) but totally worth it.
2. Use airbrush frisket. Obviously airbrushers have a buttload of masking to do, so this stuff is highly specialized for that purpose. It's this clear film with a light adhesive that you can lay over your work. It's kind of pointless if your just making boxes, but if you want you can cut out highly intricate shapes for complex masking needs. I'm not sure how applicable this is to marker rendering, but some people may find it useful :3. The major downside to this is that it's typically laid on the work before parts are cut out, so a new Exact-o blade and an EXTREMELY light and careful hand are necessary.
3. Use ghetto airbrush frisket. The formal frisket is really nice but kind of expensive, so you can just use a temporary fixative and trace paper if you want to be cheap (like me!). Also it's easier to trace your work and cut out the necessary pieces BEFORE you glue to your work, so it may save you some accidental score lines (once again, like me XD).
And as a side note I have no idea if I spelled frisket right so hopefully you'll still be able to tell what I'm talking about XD

I'll have to try using drafting tape. Thank you so much for the suggestion!!!! I've been using frisket (whenever I have time to even do marker drawings anymore, *sob*)...though yeah, it IS expensive. I'll have to try the ghetto kind, too. *Lol*
That's a pretty amazing. Thank you SOOO much for taking the time to write this comment. And yeah, you spelled frisket right. ^__^;;

Yes, I love my drafting tape, although beware; it still needs to be pulled off slowly, especially if it's been stuck to the picture for a while *just tore my final presentation by ripping it off too fast .n.* And thank you for the awesome tutorial! I'm saving up for a set of 72 Copics so I've been looking around for good resources, and this is one of the best I've found! Thank you for taking the time to help out us newbies ^^ <3

For the love of little puppies I will always remember! No real grey for shadows! Thank you very much for this tutorial. I am only just starting with copic markers. Have about eight of them. And I can see why they're so expensive. I've never used a better tool in my life! This is very helpful and I will be sure to keep an eye out for any other tutorials by you.

It's a lot better to use your cat for collecting lint. Make them roll around their pillows or catbeds, or just get whatever is on their beds. There's always a lot ;3; It works best too, since the cat fur is soft also. Don't use dogs. They have less fur and it hurts for them when you try rubbing tape on them. Mine bit me when I tried!
