[what's going on with deviantart's submissions?!]For one of my classes, we had to pick an adjective
My adjective was "Sleek"
With given adjective, we had to design a vehicle
Since it was supposed to be sleek, I thought of animals that I associate with that. Snakes and marine life. I went for marine life, since that is my love. +heart
I was thinking of a sleek fish that has recognizable features. Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises) all have the same basic look. The same for pinnipeds (seals and sea lions).
Then I moved to Elasmobranchii (sharks, rays and skates). Rays have a distint look as do some species of sharks. I was gonna do a strange mixture of a hammerhead and a manta ray, but it looked very strange. So I just kept with the hammerhead.
Mine wasn't that difficult of an adjective, but it had it's problem.
This was the first concept, which ended up being too complicated.... i.e. - not "sleek" enough
But I was trying to figure out how it would function as well... Not keeping in mind that it could all be interior.
I still like the design though. And the coloring was optional. I did it right before class (which is why it's rushed) because I thought the coloring was mandatory. Oh well.

I'm working on a piece for my 3D modeling portfolio. I'm currently a graduating college student at The Art Institute of Dallas.
I was wondering if I could use your concept piece and create a 3D model from it.
I will make sure to state your name in the final result and give you credit for the concept.
If this piece has been built into a 3D model before please let me know.

Actually, its fine by me if you use it. Credit is also very much appreciated.
It hasn't been made into a model yet - but I'm trying to talk my boyfriend into making it since he's much better at modeling mechanical stuff than i am - though I'm thinking about trying my hand at it.
If you do use it, be sure to let me see the finished pieces. I'd love to see what you do with it.

Great design, Robyn! The line art is beautiful, and the thought process behind the concept is detailed and well-planned. Most marine animals do have that very sleek and shiny feel to them when you think of them. It does look sleek, but I guess to enhance it further, simplfying it a little more might help, but then I'm not sure how it would work properly, because everything I see on the exterior serves an essential function. It still looks nice, though. Is this from Character and Object Design, or from a different class?

Character and Object Design. The entire class had to redo it based on critiques from the class so I simplified mine like crazy. Griffin ended up liking it, but said it could still be simplified much more. I have to find that and actually ink and color it before I submit it on dA.

This somewhat reminds me of the "Thresher" design they used for the mini-sub that appeared in the series "SeaQuest-DSV"; it also followed a shark-theme for it's basic design.
I think you have a good start here... you should try knocking it back down a few points -- less technical, more form-follow-function, etc. -- to get the sleek look you're aiming for.
A good start! Thanks for sharing!

I was about the mention the same... At first before reading the Desc, I thought it was from SeaQuest X3

Some other students in my class began mentioning shows and such that it reminded them of. Sadly, I didn't know (or remember the name of) any of the shows. Apparently Beast Wars had a toy like it, but I don't recall it.
I guess because the hammerhead is such a well known and recognizable fish, it's silohuette is used often.
I actually had to redesign it again (my entire class did) and the other is much simplier, but I need to find it, ink it and color it before I submit it to deviantart.
