Description
Hmm, I don't know how gory it looked, when a Spinosaurus ate a fish, but I decided to put this under mature content for safetyHere, we have our fisher king, Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, that now enjoys the fresh meat of an unfortunate Mawsonia sp. The coloration and appearance of this Spinosaurus is based on Manuelsaurus ' Spinosaurus model he did for the game Wrath of the Goliaths: Dinosaurs
The illustration was done for Wrath of the Goliaths: Dinosaurs (Ascendence Studios)
Copyright: me & Ascendence Studios
Thank you all for having a look at this drawing, taking the time to fave and comment

Thank you much for the compliment!
This and other features shows how diverse dinosaurs were in their body forms and they never cease to surprise us

Thank you so much! Sometimes, I wonder "Did I draw this? Really?"
Well, nobody has asked me to do an illustration for a dinosaur book, but it was for a dinosaur related game and they use it also as a cover for their FB page www.facebook.com/AscendenceStu… , aside from featuring the artwork.
Luckily, I took a lot of reference photos in my home area, which helped a lot to draw the shore and the water. If you like, you can also watch a process video, which shows the development from a rough sketch to the finished scene www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PcLqo…

Regardless of whether or not the Mawsonia is in proportion to the Spinosaurus and even though the Spino is on land, this is still a great piece of art. I know some people think that Spinosaurus wouldn't be able to stand on land and only "belly crawl" but who knows. I think probably the Spinosaurus found by Ibrahim et al. only could belly crawl, but maybe some of its earlier relatives were better equipped to stand on land. We'll just have to wait for more discoveries to know for sure.
Anyway, the detail in the scales is just mind blowing and I like the dark color scheme, reminiscent of an American Alligator. I suppose the only thing I don't care for is how the antorbital fenestra has that ridge of scales around it, which gives the head a slight skeletal appearance. I suppose it's possible but aesthetically I prefer it when that part isn't outined.
(At least for paleoart. If it's fiction, it doesn't bother me as much.) I also thought that Spinosaurus' toes were all touching the ground and a little longer and "flatter" than shown here. I cannot remember for certain though...
But despite this, it's still one of my favorite drawings of Spino ever made.

The client asked for a Spinosaurus, that stand on all fours and a fish carcass should be placed in front of it, whereas an exact wasn't given. Since I'm not an expert on the topic of ancient fishes I did a quick research of what kind of fishes lived in the same area and time as Spinosaurus did and I found Mawsonia.
So, I just executed the specifications of the client. If they had requested to draw a Spinosaurus doing ballet in a pink dress, well it would have been my job to create something like that
Well, the debate how Spinosaurus might have moved around on land is a never ending story and I'm curious what will come up as next.
Thank you much, I tried to get a good depiction of these scales, like apsaravis or arvalis do it in their drawings. As you know I usually don't draw my dinosaurs with visible temporal fenestrae, but the model, which was my reference showed them, so I stuck to my references.
As for the feet, I tried to help me with some preliminary sketches and posing my old Spinosaurus model in that way. Sometimes, it is a hit and miss...

The fish needs to be to scale (too small) and the theropod should be underwater.

Well, the client wished that the Spinosaurus should stand in a quadrupedal stance near a river as Grizzly bears do often, when they are hunting. As for the fish I had some freedom, because the client did't specify a particular species. Maybe it is a young Mawsonia, but thank you for the reminder. In case I should draw something like this again, then I know to draw a bigger specimen

Mawsonia is one and a half times the size of a great white, keep that in mind. Tells you something about how "weak" Spinosaurus actually was.

You need to do the artwork for a book about dinosaurs. it surpasses most of what I have seen! Keep up the great work!

If someone commissioned me to make illustrations for a dinosaur book I probably would start immediately to blush
Or I produce an art book called "The Madness I call Paleo Art"
Thank you so much for your opinion about my drawing

Seriously, this is at the caliber of paleo books I have seen, and I would love to see you get a gig in that. Show off your art to some potential people. You have the ability and talent, and I do NOT just say that to anyone I meet. It takes someone who can make it that I say these things to.

It is really a great honor to hear your honest opinion about my drawing and also my skill, so the only thing I can do is to bow down gratefully
The image became a background image for Ascendence Studios' FB page and they want it also as a loading screen for their game.

Thank you so much, because your feedback is like an approval for this drawing, where I tried to stay as close as possible to your Spinosaurus model. Making the Spinosaurus based on your model was easier instead of using the bare skeletal, because a 3D model gives you an idea how the dinosaur might have looked in 3D space.

I had luckily a good reference for drawing the Spinosaurus, only the perspective needed to be practiced. R.I.P. unfortunate Mawsonia, that became a meal

I agree it is a kinda strange to see a theropod in a quadrupedal stance and I'm not sure how correct these proportions are due to the debate about possible mistakes, but I drew it as it was commissioned.

Rip it, tear it and devour it
Giving the Spinosaurus a box with sushi would have been more appealing, but Spino would have had its difficulties to eat with sticks...
